On the Burqa Ban « Hala_In_USA
I have been following the debate on burqa ban in France and Europe, the idea behind the ban is supposedly to protect the value system of the European countries, according to the statement from the leading politicians behind the ban and not to protect the right of conscious of the minority, there is also a nice historical summary of the origin of the veil and its various symbologies on wikipedia … The debate about this revolved about how the ban would breach the liberty of conscious and the equal rights of religious practice, Martha Nausbaum has presented a wonderful theoretical analysis of the fallacy of the various claims ... market research, surveys and trends

which analyzes any portion of text you provide and then tells you which famous author was most likely to have written that text. It’s wildly inaccurate and a huge waste of time, and yet it’s strangely compelling and fun. I pasted some of the most memorable NBA quotes into the “I Write Like” analyzer — and here were the results. “It’s easy to talk about, its easy to sum it up when you just talk about practice.  We sittin’ in here, I’m supposed to be the franchise player, and we in here talkin’ about practice.  I mean listen, we talkin’ ’bout practice.  Not a ... market research, surveys and trends

I'm guessing the answer isn't "practice". | Ask MetaFilter
Help me understand what seems like a contradiction: News stories I read seem to depict there being quite a lot of immigration into EU countries, and attendant unrest over cultural factors. But while a lot of people I know say they would love to move to Europe, the few who've actually done research into it seem to indicate that it's nearly impossible to get in unless you're wealthy or in a select few professions. How do middle and lower class people actually immigrate to Europe? See also here for an example. This isn't really a personal thing, it's just something that's been niggling at me for a ...
How would you respond to this racist statement regarding hiring ...
I have never heard that Indians are "known for bending the truth." Or rather, I have heard that blacks, Jews, Hispanics, etc. etc. are all "known" for bending the truth, or any number of other slurs. Sorry, but this is bigotry, pure and simple, and not based on any "known" information but the prejudice of the person doing the recruiting. To me, this is just your friend's justification for why she doesn't hire people who are Indian. ...
