The Legal Hokey-Pokey

JACALEAPA, Honduras – Exiled Honduran President Manuel Zelaya has been hanging out in Ocotal, a Nicaraguan mountain town near the Honduras border, for the last four days as he tries to launch his return to power after a coup last month . It's been a little bit like the childhood song and dance, "The Hokey Pokey." On Friday, Zelaya took a few steps into the no-man's-land between the countries. When he arrived at a sign that said "Welcome to Honduras," Zelaya claimed he was home. But he didn't stay long, returning quickly to the Nicaraguan side of the border. As the song says, "You put your ...

Colorado Medical Marijuana Regulations Now Officially Law
DENVER — Colorado has enacted statewide regulations for the medical marijuana industry which could potentially allow hundreds of dispensaries to continue operating. Gov. Bill Ritter on Monday signed two bills passed by lawmakers this session to rein in the estimated 1,100 medical marijuana dispensaries that have cropped up around the state. Both laws take effect immediately. One allows only doctors in good standing to recommend medical marijuana. The other sets up a uniform set of rules for marijuana dispensaries as well as growers and makers of marijuana-infused snacks preferred by some patients. Regulators expect only ... market research, surveys and trends

Gay Marriage poll | Gates Blog | Rochester Democrat and Chronicle
Mother’s Political Blog is reporting on a new Siena College Research Institute poll found that 43 percent of New Yorkers support gay marriage, 47 percent oppose it. Where do the people of Gates stand? Me? I oppose it. I guess stances like that are among the reasons the folks at say I’m not “edgy” enough! ( Later note : It was a person posting a comment, and not the official RT folks who described me that way.) The poll also shows that the surveyed New Yorkers oppose pay raises for lawmakers by 62 to 32 percent. Now some folks argue that you need to give raises so you can retain quality ... industry trends, business articles and survey research
Gambling in California
Californians can choose from a variety of gambling opportunities. California has legal gaming that includes a state lottery, parimutuel horse wagering, cardclubs, Indian casinos, and charitable gaming. Much of the basic framework of gaming has been enacted by the people through constitutional amendments rather than by the Legislature. The State Lottery was enacted through a constitutional amendment as was horse racing. The Constitution specifically prohibits Nevada and New Jersey-type casino gaming. Gambling is a $14 billion business in California as measured by the handle. 1 The amount actually lost by consumers is much ... industry trends, business articles and survey research
Injustice Anywhere is a Threat to Justice Everywhere – MLK, Jr.
Here’s a fun little mental exercise in National Identity that you might want to try the next time that you find yourself in a group of – oh, say—over a hundred people in America. The occasion isn’t important – wedding reception, graduation, bris, retirement party, Office Christmas Party, Bat Mitzvah – any social gathering will do. Wait for generalized boredom and/or inebriation to overtake the crowd, then ask everyone to join in a brief, harmless little game that you promise will be more fun than doing the Hokey Pokey. Explain to the gathering you are going to give a brief description of a “social set” and that those who fit the ... market trends, news research and surveys resources

Language Log » The Hokey Cokey as a hate crime
One scarcely needs to comment at all sometimes. I am most grateful to Victor Steinbok for alerting Language Log to an article in the Daily Telegraph (the link will be given below) about how singing the old song "The Hokey Cokey" could be defined as a hate crime, at least in Scotland. You might like to reflect for a minute, before I give you the link, on how this song could conceivably stir up hatred against any racial, religious, ethnic, or cultural group. A sample of the lyrics (you can read the whole of the lyrics here ): You put your left arm in, your left arm out In out, in out, you shake it all about You do the ... technology research, surveys study and trend statistics

WikiAnswers - Is the Hokey-Pokey really what it is all about
the Hokey Pokey itself, is all about. But if by "it" we mean "life," then most would say there is more to "it" than the Hokey Pokey. For example, there is also the Macarena and the Chicken Dance. It's gotta be one of the most embarrassing dances, so yah, the hokey pokey is really what it is all about. ANSWER: Not exactly. First you put your right foot in, then you take your right foot out. You put your right foot in and you shake it all about. Then you put your left foot in, you take your left foot and shake it all about. You do the hokey pokey and you shake it all about and that my friend is ...
