Big Labor and Libertarianism | The League of Ordinary Gentlemen
I think the real obstacle to a libertarian-left alliance is the labor movement. In the UK that movement has its own party. Here, the Democrats are the nominal representatives of labor. I think for libertarians this will be a major hurdle. I see a Cameron-like Republican party emerging before I see a real reformation of public worker unions. As I explained in the comments to Erik’s post , I think he’s largely missing what I’m trying to get at with my support for liberaltarianism, which I view as less about electoral coalition building than it is about “asking the question of where libertarianism has gone ... market research, surveys and trends

He pointed out that average right to work states have an 8 percent unemployment rate, compared with Michigan's rate of 13.8 percent. Attorney General Mike Cox, who is also seeking the GOP nomination for governor, indicated support for right to work in a Tuesday Gubernatorial debate. The American Spectator : Closed Shop
Non-union construction workers could be locked out of new federal projects thanks to an executive order President Obama signed back in February on the sly as part of a payback to organized labor. The election of Republican governors in Virginia, and especially New Jersey, who are both opposed to union-only favoritism in contracting, could complicate the administration’s efforts, at least on the state level. The loss of New Jersey must be viewed as a particularly acute setback, given how active labor bosses and White House operatives were in their failed effort to secure re-election for a long-time ally. NJ Gov. Christie Vs. Unions
"You're not compensating me for my education and you're not compensating me for my experience," she bluntly told New Jersey Governor Chris Christie at a crowded town hall meeting. "Well, you know what?," the Governor shot back. "You don't have to do it." The crowd erupted into applause at his rejoinder. "Teachers go into it knowing what the pay scale is," Christie explained, "and what I'm saying is, is that in times of economic crisis, this whole argument is over the fact that I asked people to not take a raise for a year and to pay one and-a-half percent of their ... market trends, news research and surveys resources
Bernero: 'I'm a pro-business Democrat'
This is one in a series of Detroit News interviews with candidates for governor. The following are edited excerpts of an interview with Democrat Virg Bernero, who is mayor of Lansing. Q . Some of the language you use on the campaign trail ... stand up to the banks, stand up to Wall Street, etc. might be viewed as the language of Michigan's past. Will that sort of populism -- that sort of worker first, union first language lead Michigan into the future? Is there a place for that today? A . I think so, if I can get The Detroit News to join me. World War II forced the integration of the newer unions into the war effort and forced business into working out accommodations with the unions for the duration. Absent the urgency of war, business might not have conceded industrial union power quite so quickly. In this sense, World War II and its immediate aftermath represent a period of consolidation of union power. This was followed successively by containment, which began with the enactment of the Taft-Hartley law, and renewal, as evidenced by the eruption of public-sector unionism in the early 1960s. Wartime controls inevitably built up tensions within ... technology research, surveys study and trend statistics
Utah History Encyclopedia
In 1955 Utah's predominantly Mormon and Republican legislature passed its version of a "right-to-work" law and Governor J. Bracken Lee, a conservative non-Mormon Republican, signed the bill. Utah thus became the eighteenth state, and one of the few outside the South, to enact this type of legislation. The passage and retention of this law, outlawing all forms of union security in Utah, has deep historical roots associated with the locally dominant Mormon Church, which has had a long history of conflict with the labor union movement. The beginning of official church resistance to union security provisions, usually ...
