Complexity and Management

Approaches to leadership and management are still dominated by prescriptions – usually claimed as scientific – for top executives to choose the future direction of their organization. The global financial recession and the collapse of investment capitalism (surely not planned by anyone) make it quite clear that top executives are simply not able to choose future directions. Despite this, current management literature mostly continues to avoid the obvious – management’s inability to predict or control what will happen in the future. The key question now must be how we are to think about management if we ...
is the ability of a business to adapt rapidly and cost efficiently in response to changes in the business environment. Business agility can be maintained by maintaining and adapting goods and services to meet customer demands, adjusting to the changes in a business environment and taking advantage of human resources. Agility is a concept that incorporates the ideas of flexibility, balance, adaptability, and coordination under one umbrella. In a business context, agility typically refers to the ability of an organization to rapidly adapt to market and environmental changes in productive and cost-effective ways. The agile ...

In this posting I would like to contribute to the discussion of making sense of the current crisis in the financial sector as it has been taken up in recent postings by Chris Mowles and Karen Norman, and especially by Ralph Stacey in his recent book Complexity and Organizational Reality: Uncertainty and the need to rethink management after the collapse of investment capitalism .  Specifically I would like to respond and add to Ralph’s argument that we need to rethink the nature of communication and social interaction if we are to get at core crisis of ethics, particularly as it has been emerging in Western thinking.  There is ... market research, surveys and trends
Knowledge Management Issues: KM Policy and High Staff Turnover
“… what creates longevity and combats turnover in a business is making use of untapped potential within the employees and transferring the training to help each employee work at peak performance” (Awad 2004:256) If it is not stopped, high staff turnover in a knowledge-intensive workplace can spell the end of the line for an organization whether it is due to staff cuts or defection. This is clear since the more an organization bases its existence on intellectual rather than physical assets, the more vulnerable it is to mass defection of the sources and creators of those assets. Furthermore, since the larger component of the ... market research, surveys and trends

Triple-Net-Leases Regain Investors' Trust
As with all retail real estate investment sales, deal volume in the triple-net-lease market slipped drastically in 2009. Yet the triple-nets — so named because tenants pay the three “nets”: estate taxes, building insurance and maintenance — have been considered the one relatively bright spot on retail investors’ radar screens. Some buyers are even looking to ‘B’ and ‘C’ markets to find safe, single-tenant properties that house certain fast-food tenants, auto parts stores or the handful of other economically resilient leaseholders that are in favor. “McDonald’s are flying off the shelf and will sell in about the 5-cap territory — ... industry trends, business articles and survey research
Six Things You Need to Know About Object Storage
)--Reducing storage costs is a top agenda item for IT organizations, yet data is an organization’s most valuable asset. Struggling with the performance, scalability and management complexity required to maintain conventional file-based storage systems is a losing battle if you need to store your data more than 90 days. Object-based storage delivers a better value proposition with improved performance, unlimited scalability and near-zero administration to provide businesses with unbeatable storage TCO when managing vast capacities of unstructured data, according to Caringo ... market trends, news research and surveys resources
Powerful Entry-To-Exit Security
SSL VPN that data center managers can add seamlessly to existing application infrastructures, providing secure remote access for employees. • Interesting Fact: One of the most common security holes in companies of any size is employees forwarding business information to their personal email accounts. If there’s a will, there’s a way. That’s the mantra of employees (and hackers) who circumvent the established security protocols in an SME. These users figure out ways to tap into company resources to forward sensitive documents to personal accounts and use instant messaging and other ... market trends, news research and surveys resources

Google Answers: Scientific models in management studies
Could you please point me to literature, where principles or models from natural sciences are applied to management studies. Ideally, I would like to find articles or books where concepts from physics are applied to organisational behaviour. (but other scientific fields or business fields are of interest, too) I am not interested in literature where scientific jargon is superficially used to make a management idea sound better, but rather literature where our knowledge in science makes a substantative improvement to our understanding of how organisations work. Greetings Jojoma: Concerning your query. I have located ...

What a terrific question, Swam. The only problem is that there are so many possible answers. Lines of code is probably the most common one, of course, and we haven't been able to get rid of that in half a century. A more subtle answer is all the measurements that confuse effort with results. Managers who don't understand the work tend to reward the appearance of work. Myself, I like to see a programmer or tester who is well organized and plans well, so s/he can complete a full days work in eight hours and go home and have a life. But too many managers reward those people who come in early and stay late, while appearing ...
