Information Management reflects the need to turn enormous and rapidly increasing amounts of enterprise information into relevant business insight. Today, exabytes of digital information are created, captured and replicated, and it is complex and time-consuming to manage and exploit information at this massive scale. Enterprise customers are demanding information management technologies that deliver speed, agility, competitive differentiation and compliance. Knowledge workers expect to be able not only to access relevant information quickly, but also to extract business insights from rich information resources. Two significant ...
By measuring gravity, GRACE shows how mass is distributed around the planet and how it varies over time. GRACE data are important tools for studying Earth's ocean , geology , and climate . GRACE is a collaborative endeavor involving the Center for Space Research at the University of Texas, Austin ; NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory , Pasadena, Calif.; the German Space Agency and Germany's National Research Center for Geosciences, Potsdam. The Jet Propulsion Laboratory is responsible for the overall mission management under the NASA ESSP program. The principal investigator is Dr. Byron Tapley of the University of Texas
Annals of Global Warming: NOAA team finds oceans heated up since ...
The upper layer of the world’s ocean has warmed since 1993, indicating a strong climate change signal, according to a new study. The energy stored is enough to power nearly 500 100-watt light bulbs per each of the roughly 6.7 billion people on the planet. “We are seeing the global ocean store more heat than it gives off,” said John Lyman, an oceanographer at NOAA’s Joint Institute for Marine and Atmospheric Research , who led an international team of scientists that analyzed nine different estimates of heat content in the upper ocean from 1993 to 2008. The MDL SCREEN Approach to the Problem of Managing Data
A distributed information system strategy is presented for managing the process of screening and the large volumes of data expected from enterprise-wide High Throughput Screening (HTS) programs. Project-level HTS is managed on a dedicated, laboratory-based server (the WORKGROUP), in which all aspects of HTS data management, inventory management, and automation integration are performed. The individual WORKGROUPs are linked together though a central screening data server that integrates summary data from across the organization and coordinates workflow-based information shared across all WORKGROUPs. This architecture, ... industry trends, business articles and survey research

Finding the Renewable Workforce: The Value of Ex-Military Hires
The demand for wind power is at an all-time high. Just about every year, the wind sets a new record, recently putting close to 10 GW a year online. Yet it isn't enough. States continue to set higher and higher renewable portfolio standards (RPS). The problem is that there is already a shortage of qualified wind technicians, managers and general staff. So where are the resources going to come from to fulfill an ever-expanding demand–a shortfall of literally millions of jobs–within a decade or so? The wrong direction is to attempt to headhunt from existing utilities. They are already hurting on the personnel front so such ... market trends, news research and surveys resources

Google Answers: GFS or VxFS: Which clustered file system for Linux?
We are in the process of moving from an environment of boxed servers with direct-attached SCSI RAIDS to a blades/FC-SAN setup. We mostly run RHEL3 but we are interested in large (>2Tb) partitions so we are planning to upgrade to RHEL4. Our typical workload is a large research job that accesses hundreds of megabytes of data and does some fairly heavy computation. Data tends to be stored in relatively large (10-100Mb) flat files, i.e. no commercial database is used. Currently we use NFS to share files. We often have contention for a given server as jobs tend to run much faster when the data is local. We believe a clustered ...
