The landfill was created in 1982 by the State of North Carolina as a place to dump contaminated soil as result of an illegal PCB dumping incident. The site, which is about 150 acres, was extremely controversial and led to years of lawsuits. Warren County was one of the first cases of environment justice in the United States and set a precedent for other environmental justice cases. The site was approximately three miles south of Warrenton. The state owned about 19 acres of the tract where the landfill was located and Warren County owned the surrounding acres around the borders.

The companies say they may also be shortchanged as Congress develops long-term rewards for alternative fuels. “We’ve become the unseen renewable energy source that no one pays attention to,” Waste Management’s Chief Executive Officer David Steiner said in an interview. “Why not help us? The tonnage increase represents a 3.2 percent rise during a year in which total landfill disposal fell by 12.2 percent. “It is remarkable to see this kind of increase during a recession, and it bodes well for North Carolina’s ability to create jobs and grow the economy around the recovery of materials,” said Scott Mouw, chief of Community and Business Assistance in the N.C. What do you do with 3lbs. of mercury? | Ask MetaFilter
I have a friend who is an active scrapper. She is constantly collecting metals of all sorts, and periodically taking it all to the scrap yard, where she gets money for selling scrap metal. She is more than willing to dumpster dive to get a piece of copper or a few aluminum cans. She works as a commercial cleaning woman, sometimes cleaning out buildings before and after construction. She was recently cleaning out an old (semi-abandoned) 6 story building in Central Florida. One of the offices was once, a long time ago, a dentist's office. There, she found the mercury - 3lbs 2oz of the silvery liquid stuff. (Apparently, ...
