SOA also generally provides a way for consumers of services, such as web-based applications, to be aware of available SOA-based services. For example, several disparate departments within a company may develop and deploy SOA services in different implementation languages; their respective clients will benefit from a well understood, well defined interface to access them. XML is commonly used for interfacing with SOA services, though this is not required. SOA defines how to integrate widely disparate applications for a world that is Web based and uses multiple implementation platforms. Rather than defining an API , SOA defines ...

What's happening with event processing?
I have been doing some thinking about (complex) event processing recently and it seems to me that, with the exception of companies that are very strongly focusing on capital markets (notably Sybase [SAP] and, to a lesser extent, StreamBase), the clear trend in the market is towards merging with other forms of “processing” technology. You can see this in the history of acquisitions within the market. The first such happened when Avaya bought iSpheres way back in 2006. It integrated the iSpheres event processing with its own communications processing capabilities. Then there was IBM’s acquisition of AptSoft in ... market trends, news research and surveys resources

paradigm. Unlike traditional programs, which follow their own control flow pattern, only sometimes changing course at branch points, the control flow of event-driven programs is largely driven by external events. Instead of waiting for a complete command which may order it to process information, the system is preprogrammed with an event loop , to look repeatedly for information to process (whether this might be the appearance of a file in a folder, a keyboard or mouse operation, or a timer event) and then perform a trigger function to process it. Programming an event driven system is thus a matter of rewriting the default ...
