"I need for all of you to fight for the future. I need all of you to be open to creative ways of doing business. None of us can afford to watch the American auto industry fail." [Barack Obama, 2006, addressing the UAW convention; Source: The New York Times, November 30, 2008] The then Illinois Senator (and now president-elect) was not alone in sensing trouble ahead. The Detroit Three automakers (GM, Ford, Chrysler) had already been restructuring globally and working on technologies that would make their cars run cleaner, more efficient, and petroleum ...
of something. Quality is a perceptual, conditional and somewhat subjective attribute and may be understood differently by different people. Consumers may focus on the specification quality of a product/service, or how it compares to competitors in the marketplace. Producers might measure the conformance quality , or degree to which the product/service was produced correctly. Numerous definitions and methodologies have been created to assist in managing the quality-affecting aspects of business operations. Many different techniques and concepts have evolved to improve product or service quality. There are two common ...

Agile & Business: What is Business Value Engineering?
It is a framework for looking at the delivery of business value. It is called BV Engineering for two reasons. First, instead of hand-waving, we believe that BV Engineering should include qantitative measures (although not be dominated by metrics), and, second, it is called that so that it is approached like other engineering practices in Scrum, as something that is not prescribed, except to say one must always have them, identify them, and improve them. And BV Engineering becomes one of those engineering practices. Where do we start? We start with a grossly simplistic franework that says: we have * a box of customers (external ... market research, surveys and trends
IT operations can learn from lean manufacturing | The IT Skeptic
It's only a matter of time before one of the larger consultancies recognises that to win lucrative contracts to upgrade (or implement) ITIL V3 then a pretty radical new approach is required. The drivers for this are the ones we would expect to see: - - CIO's are fed up of forking out for large, costly initiatives that have rather dubious payback - Service Executives are keen to leverage new approaches - especially ones that promise efficiencies just by executing the methodology ('Lean') - Service Managers are always (quite rightly) on the look out for anything that can take them forwards, get them the V3 ... market research, surveys and trends

STSC CrossTalk - Welcoming Software Into the Industrial Fold - May ...
Software has long been the odd man out in business: It operates in ways that are different than, and often incompatible with, the disciplines of other industries, even when it is teamed with those disciplines under the same enterprise. It generally underperforms other industries on productivity improvement, integration success, quality, and customer satisfaction. Applying Lean production to software enables it to become an industry that works well with classic industries. Lean greatly increases software’s contribution to enterprise and customer success. Software development can greatly improve its business performance by ... industry trends, business articles and survey research

Slashdot | Open Source on Windows - Boon or Bane for Linux?
Either way it's a win for FOSS. When I moved from Windows 2000 to FreeBSD on my desktop (I never found a Linux distro I considered usable), I was more or less able to swap out the OS and still have exactly the same apps running on top of it (OpenOffice.org, Thunderbird, Opera, (g)Vim). I replaced WinAMP with XMMS. Cross platform software made ditching Windows a whole lot easier than it would have been. With an entirely cross-platform software stack the OS becomes the least important part of the system, and can be swapped out at will. This is one of Microsoft's biggest fears. It's something they are so afraid ...
