Linguistics encompasses a number of sub-fields. An important topical division is between the study of language structure ( grammar ) and the study of meaning ( semantics and pragmatics ). Grammar encompasses morphology (the formation and composition of words ), syntax (the rules that determine how words combine into phrases and sentences ) and phonology (the study of sound systems and abstract sound units). Phonetics is a related branch of linguistics concerned with the actual properties of speech sounds ( phones ), non-speech sounds, and how they are produced and perceived . Other sub-disciplines of linguistics include the ...

I recently came across a rather awesome analysis on Ribbonfarm that adds some much-needed complexity to the basic dichotomy between vertical and horizontal models of corporate control . These fantastic and well-writ posts ( The Gervais Principle I and II ) have been hit up on Slashdot and have circulated far & wide for good reason. Like Christian Marazzi’s work that deftly summarizes the significance of language to capital – the way language informs the fluctuations of the stock market and global economy (see Capital and Language ) – Venkat analyses the way in which language is ab/used by particular players in corporate ... market research, surveys and trends

Let’s suppose you’re an information provider who has decided to diversify revenue opportunities by creating platforms and tools to monetize data. Perhaps your organization has received a mandate from the Obama Administration to support the Open Government Initiative . Perhaps your strategic plan compels you to move away from text and pictures. Either way, you are facing a paradigm shift that brings with it any number of complex implications for your business. One of these will be that, almost overnight, you will need a new framework for peering into your own business because it has become exponentially more complex to track. market research, surveys and trends

ABSTRACT. Previous research on racial/ethnic labeling among Latino populations in the U.S. has explored the continuing salience of racial/ethnic identities, and how these identities vary considerably by factors such as language use, national origin, generational status, region, and social context. However, while research has explored the role of language fluency (English or Spanish-speaking ability) in Latinos' racial/ethnic labeling choices, very little research has explored how language itself may transform the meaning of a particular racial/ethnic label. Drawing on interviews with fifty-two Mexican Americans from five ... industry trends, business articles and survey research
What Lawyers Need to Know About Search Tools
It will come as no surprise to anyone who has handled complex litigation during the past five years that the volume of electronically stored information that must be reviewed in the course of discovery can be staggering. It may be more surprising to learn that keyword search is not nearly as effective at identifying relevant information as many lawyers would like to believe. See David C. Blair and M.E. Maron, "An Evaluation of Retrieval Effectiveness for a Full-Text Document-Retrieval Sys.," 28(3) Comm. of the ACM 289 (1985) (showing lawyers estimated their search had identified 75 present of the relevant documents when only ... market trends, news research and surveys resources

Concerning the linguistic profession, it may be useful to distinguish linguistics as conducted along two major axes, namely: * Theoretical vs. Applied : Theoretical (or general) linguistics is concerned with frameworks for describing individual languages and theories about universal aspects of language; applied linguistics applies these theories to practical problems such as language teaching , speech synthesis , or speech therapy . * Autonomous vs. Contextual (note: these terms are not well-established): Autonomous linguistics studies what Saussure called langue or what Chomsky calls I[nternal]-language : the nature of language ...
Computer languages considered in linguistic contexts? | Ask MetaFilter
I've volunteered to give a talk about computer languages, for an audience which is primarily interested in linguistics, not computers. One thing I'm definitely going to be talking about is Perl, which is unusual among computer languages in that, for instance, it has "pronouns". For more detail, see Larry Wall's " Natural Language Principles In Perl ". Wall deliberately went against the grain of language construction, it seems to me, in that he didn't aim for perfection or concision, whereas most language creators would seem to be aiming for something more like a Philosophical Language . Another example of a ...
