Coastal Zone Management Act and what it means to ORC and the County
When my oldest son, a Marine, left for war and crossed the border from Kuwait into Iraq in March 2003 I started writing my conscience. After two tours that young combat veteran, my first born son, is now permanently disabled suffering from post traumatic stress disorder and his mother is now an ardent peace activist. Today I am active with Veterans for Peace, Military Families Speak Out and on the board of Rural Organizing Project Also, I am CEO of Rogue River Wind, Ltd and the inventor of a low profile wind turbine incorporating a high bandwidth generator developed with Portland State University. Sandy beaches provide important nesting habitat for sea turtles. Here yellow survey tape designates sea turtle nests in Puerto Rico. The coastal zone of the United States contains a wide range of natural habitats such as sand dunes, marshes, coastal and mangrove forests, coral reefs, and submerged aquatic vegetation (SAV) beds. These coastal habitats are economically and ecologically valuable. They provide food, shelter, and breeding grounds for coastal and marine species, including commercially important species such as crabs, shrimp and salmon. The ocean covers 71 percent of the Earth's surface and contains 97 percent of the planet's water, yet more than 95 percent of the underwater world remains unexplored.  The ocean and lakes play an integral role in many of the Earth's systems including climate and weather. The ocean supports the life of nearly 50 percent of all species on Earth and helps sustain that life providing 20 percent of the animal protein and five percent of the total protein in the human diet. One of every six jobs in the United States is marine-related and over one-third of the U.S. Gross National Product originates in coastal ... industry trends, business articles and survey research

State senator shines on Fripp Island issue
Fifteen years ago, we fell in love with Fripp Island and dreamed of retiring here. In 2004, we moved to Fripp and built an oceanfront home. We were thrilled with our investment -- until April 2009. Last April, the state Department of Health and Environmental Control's Office of Ocean and Coastal Resource Management reviewed Fripp's setback lines and moved them 20 feet -- right through the middle of our living room. We were afraid our dream home was now worthless, as were more than 100 other oceanfront property owners. And if our property values plummeted, what about the rest of the island? We will never be able to ... market trends, news research and surveys resources

Is Erosion also is a problem on Beaufort's Harbor Island and at ...
There were no major blows from tropical storms on the S.C. coast last year, but four sea islands remain vulnerable to erosion. That’s according to the annual State of the Beaches report issued Wednesday by the state’s Office of Ocean and Coastal Resource Management. The report notes several cabins on the southwestern end of Hunting Island in Beaufort County have been lost to erosion in the past year or so. Erosion also is a problem on Beaufort’s Harbor Island and at the northeastern end of Sullivans Island in Charleston County. The report also found that a parking lot that provides public beach access to Pawley’s Island, near ...
Water resource challenges? - Yahoo! Answers
I need three freshwater and three ocean water resource challenges and their description. Choose one of the resource challenges and describe indetail why the issue has become a problem and how human activities have contributed to the problem? Please help I am no good at science. Salt water intrusion of coastal wells is a fresh water challenge. When fresh water is withdrawn at a faster rate than it can be replenished, a draw down of the water table occurs with a a resulting decrease in the overall hydrostatic pressure. When this happens near an ocean coastal area, salt water from the ocean intrudes into the fresh water aquifer. ...
