The Measurement of Productive Efficiency

The literature of productive efficiency analysis is dominated by two separate branches: the nonparametric data envelopment analysis (DEA) and the parametric stochastic frontier analysis (SFA). The origins of DEA date back to the seminal paper by Farrell (1957) , but its current popularity is largely due to the influential work by Charnes et al. (1978). The late seventies also saw the birth of SFA in the works of Aigner et al. (1977) and Meeusen and van den Broeck (1977), among others. Today, the literature of DEA and SFA is voluminous and growing rapidly (see e.g. recent surveys by Cherchye and Post, 2003; Murillo-Zamorano, ...
approaches which are used for the estimation of production frontiers (see Lovell & Schmidt 1988 for an early survey). One can also combine the relative strengths from each of these approaches in a hybrid method.(Tofallis 2001) "The framework has been adapted from multi-input, multi-output production functions and applied in many industries. DEA develops a function whose form is determined by the most efficient producers. This method differs from the Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) statistical technique that bases comparisons relative to an average producer. Like Stochastic Frontier Analysis (SFA), DEA identifies a " frontier

which permits unrestricted use, distribution, and reproduction in any medium, provided the original work is properly cited. The purpose of this study was to compare technical and scale efficiency of primary care centers from the two largest Greek providers, the National Health System (NHS) and the Social Security Foundation (IKA) and to determine if, and how, efficiency is affected by various exogenous factors such as catchment population and location. The sample comprised of 194 units (103 NHS and 91 IKA). Efficiency was measured with Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) using three inputs, -medical staff, nursing/paramedical staff, ... market research, surveys and trends

Differences Across First District Banks In Operational Efficiency ...
Economists devoted little attention to differences across banks in operational efficiency until about 15 years ago, when banks began to fail with increasing frequency. Some economists (for example, Bennett 1986, Davis 1986, Kaufman 1991) attributed the rising failure rate in part to intensified competitive pressures generated by deregulation and technological innovation. According to this view, stiffer competition disciplined inefficient institutions viable only in a simpler, more protected environment. If this hypothesis is correct, and a significant number of banks are still inefficiently managed, then further deregulation and ... industry trends, business articles and survey research

Historically, the idea behind getting a job was making sure it pays the rent, while allowing for a little spending cash on the side. But during this economic downturn, more and more job hunters find themselves re-evaluating their requirements and factoring in the chance to balance their personal and professional lives. The White House even got involved recently, hosting a forum on workplace flexibility. The event highlighted just how important it is for workers to have the chance to choose their own hours.
