Computer forensics is the study of information stored in computer systems for the purpose of learning what happened to that computer at some point in the past—and for making a convincing argument about what was learned in a court of law. Today computer forensics covers four broad categories: Hard drive forensics, which aims to inventory and locate information that is on a computer's hard drive, whether or not the information is visible to the computer's user. Hard drive forensics includes the recovery of deleted files and file fragments, the construction of timelines, and the creation of profiles of a ...
The duties of a system administrator are wide-ranging, and vary widely from one organization to another. Sysadmins are usually charged with installing, supporting , and maintaining servers or other computer systems, and planning for and responding to service outages and other problems. Other duties may include scripting or light programming , project management for systems-related projects, supervising or training computer operators, and being the consultant for computer problems beyond the knowledge of technical support staff. A system administrator must demonstrate a blend of technical skills and responsibility in order to ...

USENIX Update » Tom Limoncelli on Time Management for System ...
Tom Limoncelli is a System Administrator at Google NYC and a long time veteran of USENIX Conferences. Limoncelli has authored “Time Management for System Administrators, O’Reilly” and “The Practice of System and Network Administration”, Addison-Wesley, and is  a veteran LISA Conference presenter and trainer.  At this year’s LISA Conference, Limoncelli will be giving the classic “Time Management” training course, but with a “New Approach”, which he talks about here on the USENIX Blog exclusive. Q: What is the background on the training you are going to give at LISA? Tom Limoncelli: This year I’m teaching two half-day ... market research, surveys and trends

USENIX Update » Search Results » tutorial
The tutorial included a complete overview of the filesystem from administrative commands to details of how the data is stored on disk. The tutorial started off with a brief history of filesytems on Solaris and the design goals behind ZFS. This provided a good basis for the discussion of how ZFS was implemented. Solaris’ previous filesystem, UFS has been around since the 1980’s. It was designed for a different set of constraints. Systems had limited memory and processing power, so UFS didn’t leverage them very heavily. UFS has also had features bolted on over time. Because of this, UFS has grown unwieldy. ... industry trends, business articles and survey research

I used to love Palm Treo personal communicators like the Treo 755p. My wife and I had his and hers Treo 650s until June when I bought my iPhone. However in 2008, I cannot recommend a Treo in good conscience to anyone who does not work in an industry where Palm or Windows Mobile applications are a work necessity (see Handhelds from Palm Still Make Sense in Medicine as an example). I want to take a moment to salute Jamie Ledino of PC Magazine for telling readers in no uncertain terms to avoid buying the Treo 755p : It's been eight months since Palm released the mildly updated Sprint Treo 755p. Now Palm and Verizon are ... industry trends, business articles and survey research
Makara layers DIY platform cloud atop EC2
This spring, a startup called Makara came out of stealth mode with a beta of a product called Cloud Application Platform, which as the name suggests allowed companies to set up private platform clouds like Microsoft Azure, Google App Engine, or Engine Yard internally on their own iron. Today, Makara is doing something that will perhaps be more interesting, which is layering atop Amazon's EC2 infrastructure cloud to turn it into a platform cloud. Makara thinks that its Cloud Application Platform is the mighty Wurlitzer for controlling cloudy infrastructure. The software was launched as a beta back in February , and at the ... market trends, news research and surveys resources
Next Solaris prepped for 2011
The words "OpenSolaris" did not pass his lips once during Oracle's systems strategy update, executive vice president John Fowler in charge of server and storage did talk a little bit about the future of Oracle's Solaris Unix variant. It has been more than five years since Solaris 10 was launched, and Fowler said that next year's Solaris 11 will feature "a major set of upgrades" for key components of the operating system, and would represent the kind of leap in technology that Sun Microsystems did with its operating system when it moved from Solaris 9 to Solaris 10 in January 2005. How do I be better at system administration and helpdesk tasks ...
Quitting or hiring someone to help me is out of the question right now. I have no IT experience except that I worked on quite a few projects at grad level that required me to use Matlab and VBA. Computers were a tool, so I figured out how to configure servers and work data sources by just learning it. Fast forward 9 months and I'm now the only, and first, IT guy at a small 50-100 person company. I was hired to do all sorts of things, like help implement ERP and CRM solutions, etc. I do that, but at least half my time is taken up by help desk. I hate help desk. I've tried really hard to improve things, and believe I ...
Slashdot Ask Slashdot Story | What Does Everyone Use For Task ...
"I work as the sole IT employee at a company of about 50 people. I handle programming, support, pretty much anything that is IT related, or even that plugs in. As seems to be true with many small companies, the priorities seem to shift quite frequently. As a result, I've always got multiple programming (both new systems and improvements/changes to existing systems), integration, research, maintenance tasks/projects on my To Do list, in varying stages of completion. At any given time, I need to be able to jump back to one of these items and pick up where I left off. I am currently using Outlook Tasks, and then end up ...
