I will need a lot more examples than that. Luxury is in fact on the rise currently and Apple - at the premium end of the consumer electronics market - is also doing very well. Your example isn't even for a real product. And I don't believe innovation and price are mutually exclusive - therefore how can price beat innovation to death. I am from a country (NZ) where innovation is usually driven by lack of resources and many technical innovations are because people couldn't afford the standard item.
