I like to think of segmentation as both a process directed by statistical techniques/data and also one that can be directed hypotheses generated by marketers and researchers. Ideally, you have a segmentation that is not simply based on cluster analysis, CHAID, or whatever, but, rather one that has appeal to the marketer/organization and uses these techniques to look at different groupings of the data.
