How to format poetry on the web: an incomplete guide | Via Negativa
Web content is written in HTML, which stands for hypertext markup language. Your browser (Internet Explorer, Safari, Firefox, Chrome, etc., including whatever the hell your mobile device uses) parses this to produce the text and images you see. HTML can be styled any number of ways, but a couple widespread conventions are friendly to poetry: paragraphs are almost universally separated by spaces, as stanzas are in poetry, and it’s unusual for the first line of a paragraph to be indented, though special code does exist to do that (more on that later). And poets who like to center their text or present it in fully justified ... market research, surveys and trends
Bits & Bytes Column: The Web is evolving from static to Semantic
Tim Berners-Lee’s dream was to create a universal database where information could be easily shared among everyone – anywhere they were. Berners-Lee was instrumental in creating the original HyperText Transfer Protocol program (HTTP) and HyperText Markup Language (HTML) used between a computer’s web server and a web browser. In his personal history Berners-Lee wrote, “. . . in 1989, while working at the European Particle Physics Laboratory, I proposed that a global hypertext space be created in which any network-accessible information could be referred to by a single “Universal Document ... market research, surveys and trends

Billion-Dollar Babies | The New York Review of Books
The phenomenon that Michael Lewis and Charles Ferguson both seek to describe in their books is the dramatic accumulation of wealth driven by the Internet. Technological and business innovations are the occasion for it, and Ferguson in particular, who tells us how he started and sold his own high-tech company, explains a lot about the workings of the underlying technology. But both of these stories are really about money. The recent boom in technological advances, formation of new businesses, and personal fortunes is the third, and most dramatic, such wave generated by the computer industry in the last twenty-five years. is the next version of the Hypertext Markup Language standard for creating Web pages. The standard has lain fallow for a decade, but passionate, persistent developers resuscitated it with new features ranging from built-in video to 2D graphics. But there's a reason a minority of the population knows how to program: it's complicated. So it's no surprise that when it comes time to pitch a product, the marketing folks step in with the tasteful packaging to make it all comprehensible. What's Adobe's 64-bit Flash plan?
OS X, and Linux now are in widespread use, and software for the operating systems is following suit. So it may seem a bit backward that Adobe withdrew its only 64-bit version of Flash Player. But don't take the disappearance of Adobe Labs' experimental 64-bit Flash Player for Linux as a sign of things to come. Moving its widely used browser plug-in beyond the 32-bit era is a "top priority," said Tom Nguyen, Adobe's Flash Player product manager, on Saturday. However, Adobe isn't committing itself publicly to a delivery schedule. And if it doesn't move with some alacrity, it risks inflicting ... market trends, news research and surveys resources

Javascript: + (plus) in JavaScript, hypertext markup language ...
I am puzzled by JavaScript's use of the same operator for addition and concatenation. If I want to add two numbers I always feel I need to use eg c = Number(123) + Number(456); This seems very clumsy. And what is the difference between Number(c) and c.valueOf() ? And should all numeric variables be declared with Number()? And why did they do this! Answer Ian, JavaScript is rich in constructs for conversion between text and numeric values.  Some rules will help you remember when you need to use them.  The first rule is that when you use form input all values are pasted to a function as strings.  So if you pass ...
