It describes methods and technologies to allow machines to understand the meaning - or "semantics" - of information on the World Wide Web 1 . According to the original vision, the availability of machine-readable metadata would enable automated agents and other software to access the Web more intelligently. The agents would be able to perform tasks automatically and locate related information on behalf of the user. While the term "Semantic Web" is not formally defined it is mainly used to describe the model and technologies 2 proposed by the W3C. These technologies include the Resource Description Framework ...

The Semantic Code
I had been introduced to the concept of Semantic Markup much earlier. But it is one of the things that is not a technical necessity, so I remained at the surface for a long time. I recently got chance to delve into the whys and hows that I would like to share with you, or rather discuss with you. Semantic Markup, by itself, is a vast subject, we will focus on the web design subset of it for the purpose of this article, lets call it Semantic HTML . Semantic Markup is a way of writing your markup so that the reader understands what the data is about. The term reader includes machines like the search engine bots or parsers along ... market research, surveys and trends

The web today is like a huge buzzword bingo game. There's so much flying around that it's hard to stay in touch unless you're in it day in and day out. That's not something that old school engineers like me find easy. I'm far more comfortable staring at my editor, hacking code to interact with a database or some hardware. Interacting with users is tough. Doing it with sound engineering principles is even tougher. I'm going to take a deep breath now and mention all the web buzzwords that I can think of and somehow fit them into this article. AJAX, RIA, JSON, XML, XSLT, Progressive Enhancement, ... market research, surveys and trends

Three initial working draft documents on 'OWL' have been published by the W3C's Web-Ontology Working Group (WebOnt). OWL is a semantic markup language for publishing and sharing ontologies on the World Wide Web. OWL is derived from the DAML+OIL Web Ontology Language and builds upon the Resource Description Framework. The designers expect that OWL will support the use of automated tools which "can use common sets of terms called ontologies to power services such as more accurate Web search, intelligent software agents, and knowledge management." The OWL Web Ontology Language is being ... industry trends, business articles and survey research
Semantic Technology Blog
The purpose of this blog is to simplify concepts and applications in the world of Semantic Technology and keep you abreast of what is going on across various industries. I believe that we are going to see significant number of innovations in this area in the next decade. Sentiment analysis or opinion mining, which is relatively a new area of research is based on text extraction, natural language processing, semantic technology, statistical and various hybrid approaches, has become a topic of great interest for many companies. QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS
Slashdot | What Do You Call People Who "Do HTML"?
A webmaster is someone who controls the content of a web site. It doesn't necessarily mean they "do HTML". they might just write a document in Word format and hand it to the web monkey to do up in HTML, or they might enter data into an HTML. Whilst I refer to people who "do HTML" as web monkeys, I think Front End Developer might be what I'd put in a job ad. Strictly speaking, I think a Front End Developer should only apply to someone who knows Javascript too, but most web monkeys know a bit of that too. A webmaster is someone who controls the content of a website. Adding some ammunition to your ...
Help Me Learn CSS Zen Garden Techniques -- and How to Do CSS/XHTML ...
CSSFilter: I'm a long-time Web wonk looking to become a CSS maven - my next gig is the development and implementation of a completely modern, table-less design for a fairly big company. What learning resources out there (on the Web, in print, or otherwise) are the best for someone looking to master the techniques espoused by places like the CSS Zen Garden? What new tools should I consider using? One thing I'm having trouble with in particular: how does the designer mock up a fully CSS/XHTML design? It seems more counterintuitive than the old process of design -> cut-up into table-based layout . Based on my experience, ...
