Space Politics » Pre-markup roundup
Not a surprise. This administration has already played its space hand and moved on. When it comes to the space program, how the cards get shuffled by Congress is far down their list of priorities. This president likes meeting in the middle. For this election cycle, they’ll crow over the art of the compromise, the jobs saved/created and press on to the more immediate problems. They’re not going to waste time dickering over how to deal with crab grass in the front yard when the house is on fire. “While we are still in the process of reviewing the details of the draft, the bill appears to contain the critical ... market research, surveys and trends

Poll: 55 percent oppose legalizing marijuana | Raw Story
Show the results by state. I bet the results when the bible belt and mormon mentality are factored it the split is about 50/50 for/against. Which, IMHO, makes news because a majority of the country (allbeit a slight one) favors legalized pot. That is the real headline... Just decriminalize it and make it punishable with a simple fine like spitting on the sidewalk. They should do the same with alcohol possession. No more liquor stores. This is bullshit propaganda at its best. I don't know ANYONE that is against the legalisation of cannibus. What Amazon didn't say about e-books
and in the last month it sold 180 digital books for every 100 hardcover copies. It was one of those great self-serving press releases that had a terrific headline and all the blogs and major newspapers jumped on it. Well played, Amazon. As your CEO Jeff Bezos succinctly put it, "We've reached a tipping point with the new price of Kindle--the growth rate of Kindle device unit sales has tripled since we lowered the price from $259 to $189 ." To those who follow the book industry and happen to be part of it, this is not surprising. The Best Browser: Summer 2010 Edition
With the Chrome-Opera JavaScript speed war, HTML5 video support coming in IE9, and an improved Safari from Apple, can Firefox keep our Editors' Choice? Google Chrome , Google's entrance into the browser fray just over a year ago has sent shockwaves through the Web, delivering a potent challenge to long-time favorite Firefox . Perhaps even more eye-opening is the radical ground shift Google envisions by making the Chrome browser the centerpiece of a new Google Chrome OS in which every application lives in the Web, rather than on your local machine. All browser makers want to enable sites that act like rich, responsive ... market trends, news research and surveys resources

I was named Ranking Member on the Higher Education, Lifelong Learning, and Competitiveness Subcommittee earlier this year with great excitement. After all, workforce development and higher education were key priorities for me as a State Senator, and I was anxious to get to work on bipartisan reform initiatives here in Congress.  In the state legislature, I frequently worked across party lines to accomplish important legislation, and I am very disappointed that Ranking Member Kline and I were not given an opportunity to have input on this important bill.  Unfortunately, this first bill out of the gate is one that I simply cannot ... technology research, surveys study and trend statistics

Google Answers: Markup on coffee, popcorn, etc.
Hello jhabley, Thank you for your question. I recall an article, perhaps in Inc or Entrepreneur in the mid 80's, that claimed that the two highest profit products ever (or at least for a small business) were popcorn and balloons. Vendors at flea markets that worked only two days a week were reported as earning over $50,000 a year NET - and this was mid 80's. Popcorn came in at 98% profit and balloons just a tad behind that. TheDesertSun.com confirms what I am sure you already know: http://www.thedesertsun.com/news/stories/local/996021099.shtml "Cinemas' profit margin tied more to popcorn than ...
What is the correct way to calculate a contractor's markup of 25 ...
Having been in the residential building and remodeling business for many years, this is one of my favorite questions. I think many highly skilled craftsmen fail in business because they don't understand (and haven't had the opportunity to learn) basic business mathematics. Unless a person just starting out in the contracting business has deep pockets, they are almost certainly doomed unless they have an understanding of the business basics. The hardest problem to overcome initially is the psycological problem of learning to charge enough to pay the bills and retain enough profit to grow the business. Knowing ...
