One of my research interests is the interaction of emotion and reason in persuasion and, more specifically, in nonverbal/emotional factors in safe-sex communication and persuasion. I find that two kinds of emotion particularly important in safe-sex communication tend to be overlooked in the emotion literature: (1) reptilian emotions (raw sex and power) and (2) positive and negative prosocial emotions (attachment, love, caring, play, bonding, loss/bereavement). The affect-reason-involvement (ARI) model is a general model of how emotion and reason interact in producing involvement, and this model is widely relevant to persuasion ...
Visual stimuli may be quickly flashed before an individual may process them, or flashed and then masked, thereby interrupting the processing. Audio stimuli may be played below audible volumes, similarly masked by other stimuli, or recorded backwards in a process called backmasking . Introduced in 1897, the concept became controversial as "subliminal messages" in 1957 when marketing practitioners claimed its potential use in persuasion. Subsequent scientific research, however, has been unable to replicate most of these marketing claims beyond a mere placebo effect.
Tips for Web Marketing Advocacy and Persuasion: Guidelines for ...
The benefits of web marketing lie in the ability to turn potential consumers into actual consumers through skillful, strategic web advocacy and persuasion . To enjoy the full benefits of online marketing, corporate firms need to, first of all, be concerned about how to generate maximum visits to their advertising or corporate websites . Such visitors will usually be potential consumers or customers. It is only when potential consumers or target audience visit the specific advertising, advocacy or persuasion websites that they can be made aware of what is being offered and then be persuaded to act or buy a product. Consider principles of marketing as a tool in the Persuasion War to change the way people think, feel, and act.  A great source for discussion is this RAND report and the conversation it generated at BlingCycle , Matthew Yglesias’s blog , MountainRunner , and SocialMarketing .  We’re not limiting our ideas to just this one report, but using it as a recent exemplar. While certainly useful, like any tool, marketing has limits and we must understand these limits to achieve maximum efficiency and effectiveness from the tool. Marketing is classically defined as any activity that enhances the exchange between buyers and sellers.  It ... market research, surveys and trends

Milton Friedman recently observed that government spending and government-mandated private expenditures exceed 50 percent of national income, making the United States economy "more than half socialist." While Friedman, the leading voice of the Chicago school of free-market economics, views this fact with disdain, it didn't deter President Bush from submitting a budget that increases federal spending in most categories and includes some $1.96 trillion in outlays for the new fiscal year. With federal spending now approaching $2 trillion annually under a Republican ... industry trends, business articles and survey research

Hancock Shaker Village preserves Shaker legacy, offers lessons for today
As the turbine sent water gushing, Bev Corbett admired how the 19th century Shakers powered their wood shop and laundry in 1858. “These people built a community on the power of water and solar,” said Corbett, who visited Hancock Shaker Village in Pittsfield last month with her two children. “We’ve fixed the world in order to break it. We need to find a way to use the old technologies for new ones.” Like Corbett, many people come to the living history museum out of curiosity about a communal, celibate religious group that thrived in the first half of the 1800s but has only a few living members today. ... market trends, news research and surveys resources

Young entrepreneurs spent time Tuesday trying to find their big hit -- their version of "Monster Mash" ice cream. "Monster Mash," based on monster cookies, is a top five flavor at Heyn's Ice Cream, thanks to creative thinking four years ago by a group of kids at the Youth Entrepreneur Camp. Designing their own ice cream flavor has become a highlight of the weeklong camp for youth in fourth to sixth grades. Social Manipulation and the Unconscious | Ask MetaFilter
and psychological manipulation in advertising and government, but what about social manipulation on a micro-scale? Is it possible for a single person to manipulate the subconscious of another person? How? Any suggested reading would be most appreciated. If I understand the question correctly, you are asking if it is possible for a person to manipulate another person's subconscious, the answer would be a resounding yes. I would suggest that the larger-scale manipulations you cite (marketing, propaganda) arose from knowledge of smaller scale manipulation (of individuals and small groups). Anytime one person wants something ...
