1) Gives an ecologically valid (related to real world effects influencing behaviour) set of data due to observation of action occuring in real world. However, sometimes it is better to isolate variables which could `distort`data, (ie using same conditions/car/location etc) in order to isolate the effect that using cell phones has on accidents etc... 2) No need to select subjects and place them in potentially dangerous conditions (ie possibly more ethical). Also, real world variables would influence data/observations without effect of observer (Hawthorne/observer effect) therefore increasing overall validity of research. ...
