The Gartner Hype Cycle

the gartner hype cycle special research report Photo by
it’s essentially a map of technologies over five phases. Those phases correspond with the value of a particular technology. As you would imagine, technologies start off very exciting with a ton of hype. As reality sets in, the hype dies down, and people end up underestimating the technology (this is the Trough of Disillusionment). Finally people start to figure out both the true value of a technology and how to use it effectively and it enters the Plateau of Productivity. I’ve always thought the Flash Platform provided the best way to experiment with emerging technologies and provided companies with a widespread ...
“Google Wave is following the Gartner Hype Cycle” ..
First , we agree, from Lars Rasmussen’s viewpoint,  the internal project is likely to be following the hype cycle.  Big projects do this because there is a collective social reaction from the  development team and internal management. It is one of  initial enthusiasm followed by the dawning realization of all the complexities and things to be worked through, including intial customer response. However when looking at Wave from the outside, and the buyer point of view as an innovative product in a market, it is worth us making some additional observations. 1)  The vast majority of technology innovations do make it through ... market research, surveys and trends
Gartner hype cycle and emerging media curve balls, change-ups ...
Emerging media research and strategy blog with a particular focus on design innovation centered in the real estate industry Posted on Wednesday, 2010, June 30, 19:03, by Eric Bryn, under client relationship management , customer loyalty . The Gartner Hype Cycle is a useful graph for analyzing technology hype. Looking at the Gartner graph, I’ll posit we’re somewhere near the “Slope of Enlightenment” and the “Plateau of Productivity” with respect to social media. Over the past couple of years, business leaders have stepped up to the plate and faced some serious pitches while trying to figure out a sound business strategy that ... market research, surveys and trends

Corporate Wireless to Become Significant Platform
in Florence, Italy, Gartner today outlined its perspective and predictions for the wireless market. It said wireless will be one of the most significant platform shifts accelerating in 2003 and taking off with a vengeance in 2004. According to Gartner, increasing focus on teleworking and corporate mobility to improve enterprise performance, and trends such as the move toward the real-time enterprise, will not merely exploit mobility but will demand it. At the same time, the relentless push by vendors, virtually giving away wireless capabilities with significant price/performance improvements, is fuelling demand for wireless ... industry trends, business articles and survey research
Trends in Blog Usage and the Hype CycleTechTicker | TechTicker
“According to a 2008 survey by Technorati, which runs a search engine for blogs, only 7.4 million out of the 133 million blogs the company tracks had been updated in the past 120 days. That translates to 95 percent of blogs being essentially abandoned, left to lie fallow on the Web, where they become public remnants of a dream — or at least an ambition — unfulfilled.” Looking past the seeming sense of perverse satisfaction the author takes in documenting the fall from grace of the blog (and the fact this post is oddly categorised in the “ Fashion and Style ” section of all places), these stats do point to ... industry trends, business articles and survey research
Mitigation of the Threats of the Cloud
Cloud computing is an emerging phenomenon that offers enormous advantages, such as shorter time to market, flexible computing capabilities and limitless power, but the cloud market, still in a very early stage, continues to grow and evolve. As cloud computing evolves, it creates a global infrastructure for new possibilities used in software quality assurance and testing. Businesses can share public or hybrid clouds with each other or create private clouds to be shared within the whole company, instead of using separate options for different enterprise departments. However the cloud is also threatened by some risks. These risks ... market trends, news research and surveys resources
Hope, Hype, and VoIP: Riding the Library Technology Cycle
After the initial hype is past, the real value of an emerging technology unfolds as librarians adopt, test, and learn from it on the ground. By understanding a tool’s practical library affordances and how they are adopted, adapted, and rejected, we can better evaluate its local promise critically, creatively, and with an eye toward sustainability. The long-term adoption cycle of one established tool, Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP), offers actionable insight into the library innovation process. Web voice and video are old news: Skype’s international popularity is established, voice and video chat proliferate, embedded ... market trends, news research and surveys resources

Will Social Network Fatigue (SNF) be the death of social ...
What i would like to know is what you think will happen if the world becomes saturated with social networking sites that don't have some form of OpenID type sign on & lack of data portability. My gut feeling is that there will be a trend rejection, early adopters will move towards closed networks with a high level of social verification needed before you can join. If single sign on & data portability takes off, then this won't be the case. From the vafer blog below: "The data should belong to the user and this is clearly expressed by initiatives like FOAF. They put you in charge of your data - other people may consume ...
