This article examines the existence of price discrimination for obstetric services in two private hospitals in Bangladesh, and considers the welfare consequences of such discrimination, i.e. whether or not price discrimination benefited the poorer users. Data on 1212 normal and caesarean section patients discharged from the two hospitals were obtained. Obstetric services were chosen because they are relatively standardised and the patient population is relatively homogeneous, so minimising the scope and scale of product differentiation due to procedure and case-mix differences. The differences between the hospital list price for ...
homosexuality refers to "an enduring pattern of or disposition to experience sexual, affectional, or romantic attractions primarily to" people of the same sex; "it also refers to an individual’s sense of personal and social identity based on those attractions, behaviors expressing them, and membership in a community of others who share them." 1 2 Homosexuality is one of the three main categories of sexual orientation, along with bisexuality and heterosexuality , within the heterosexual-homosexual continuum . The longstanding consensus of the behavioral and social sciences and the health and mental health ...

BBC - Mark Easton's UK: Tension at heart of drug classification
"in terms of death, illegal drugs amounted to 1,388 in 2003 compared to about 20,000 for alcohol and 100,000 for tobacco." So the legal drugs cause 120 times as many deaths as the illegal ones? Doesn't that pretty much drive a coach and horses through the 'legalise drugs and everything will be ok' argument? (How about simplifying it? No classifications at all - if it's illegal it's illegal. Stop the mixed messages.) Complain about this comment 4. At 12:39pm on 12 Jul 2010 , wrote: Wheyyyyy You have started to write what me and many other people have been saying all along. The result is a surprising juxtaposition: As the American government seeks to end the four-decade Jewish settlement enterprise and foster a Palestinian state in the West Bank, the American Treasury helps sustain the settlements through tax breaks on donations to support them . A New York Times examination of public records in the United States and Israel identified at least 40 American groups that have collected more than $200 million in tax-deductible gifts for Jewish settlement in the West Bank and East Jerusalem over the last decade . The money goes mostly to schools, synagogues, recreation centers and the like, legitimate ... market research, surveys and trends

Welfare is the problem, not immigration
In response to a June 12 letter (Forty-nine other states need to adopt Arizona law), I must respectfully disagree. The letter writer's argument falls flat for two main reasons: legality is not synonymous with justice and immigration is not the problem, the welfare state is. A rule passed with legislative authority may be legal but doesn't necessarily fulfill the rule of law. The rule of law imposes limitations upon legislation and places requirements of generality, equality, certainty and justice on legislation for it to be legitimate. As F. A. Hayek illustrated in "The Constitution of Liberty," the rule of ... market trends, news research and surveys resources

A seller charging competing buyers different prices for the same "commodity" or discriminating in the provision of "allowances" — compensation for advertising and other services — may be violating the Robinson-Patman Act. This kind of price discrimination may give favored customers an edge in the market that has nothing to do with their superior efficiency. Price discriminations are generally lawful, particularly if they reflect the different costs of dealing with different buyers or are the result of a seller's attempts to meet a competitor's offering. Earl Warren, who was nominated to the Supreme Court by President Eisenhower in 1953, lead the Court during one of the more tumultuous eras in recent history, and presided over a number of cases that advanced the cause of civil rights. He was also partially responsible for expanding the rights of criminal suspects and defendants, both of which made the former Governor of California unpopular with conservatives. Warren, a Republican, turned out to be more liberal than his party anticipated. Earl Warren retired from the Court in 1969, after a tenure of 16 years. Some of the more important cases during Warren's tenure included:
How many Hooters locations are there in the United States?
Hooters is the trade name of two privately held American restaurant chains: Hooters of America, Incorporated, based in Atlanta, Georgia, and Hooters, Incorporated, based in Clearwater, Florida. Hooters is a restaurant with a waitstaff primarily made up of attractive, scantily-clad waitresses, though the company also employs other males/females as cooks, hosts (at some franchises), busboys, and managers. The menu includes hamburgers and other sandwiches, steaks, seafood entrees, appetizers, and the restaurant's specialty, chicken wings. Almost all Hooters hold alcoholic beverage licenses to sell beer and wine, and, where ...
