The Stage-Gate Model

the stage gate model special research report Photo by
Many project management models are based on Robert Coopers original Stage-Gate model [1][2]. My experience is that it is often misunderstood. Two common such misunderstandings are: That the stages in the Stage-Gate model imply a waterfall development process in which development activities are mapped onto the stages and performed in a strict sequence. That a Gate is some sort of project impediment or, marginally better, any old milestone. I will below suggest alternative perspectives. But first some background. The goal of most project management actions should be to maximize the value of the project. Net present value (NPV) is ...
At each gate, the continuation of the development process is decided by (typically) a manager or a steering committee. The decision is based on the information available at the time, including e.g. business case , risk analysis , availability of necessary resources (money, people with correct competencies) etc. The stage-gate model may also be known as stage-limited commitment or creeping commitment.

would allow the game industry to improve its hit rate. According to the report, 20% of the games released actually make a profit. This rate is much higher than the 5% achieved by the cheap-to-produce product out of the music and book publishing industries. This rate is only a quarter of the 80% profitability rate that the movie industry manages. The stage gate system was developed in the 1980s by Dr. Robert G. Cooper, and is detailed in his book on new product development. It is used in a diverse set of industries by “almost 70% of leading U.S. product developers”, according to the Product Development Institute ... market research, surveys and trends

The new rules of the game in oil marketing
With the freeing of fuel prices we will soon see a new regime of competitive pricing and consumer-baiting offers, writes Dilip Maitra As the government made major changes in the pricing of oil products last week, there were major apprehensions that the move will fuel inflation. The concern is genuine as experts were of the view that oil price rise will contribute at least 100 basis points (1 per cent) increase to the already high rate of inflation. Prices will go up directly due to increase in prices of petrol, diesel, kerosene and cooking gas and indirectly due to rise in transportation cost of all commodities. Naturally, your ... market trends, news research and surveys resources
If the prison walls could talk
The Pudu Prison will soon be torn down to make way for development but the absence of the physical structure will not dim the memory of a jail that holds tales both poignant and spine-chilling. ONE hundred and fifteen years after it was built, Pudu Prison is set to be torn apart to make way for development. The first stage is the demolishing of a wall for a road widening project, but soon there will be little left to show that a prison once stood there. While the physical structure may not be there for long, tales of what went on behind the prison walls will not fade away soon. I would assume that your asking about weather the stages and quality gates of the cooper methodology for product development what really confuses me though is your injection of innovation into the question. Realistically both models are the nothing more than product and project management models. Innovation is a separate concept to them altogether. Measuring it notoriously difficult if anything I would say that prince 2 could be used in the context of measurement of what items of an innovative project could be completed. You would need to decide which of the following you would like to implement as it would depend on the size ...
Does Stage Gate model add bureaucracy to the management of new ...
Bureaucrats add bureaucracy. You can define a phase gate model (Stage-Gate is a registered trademark) with as much or as little paperwork and rigidity as you desire. Glen's use of the Jack Welch quote is appropriate. A phase-end review is intended to ask hard questions and make sure that bad projects get cancelled. Some structure and some level of control is necessary, I don't have metrics, but I have worked with a couple of clients in this area, and the key seems to be to have different rules for different kinds of projects. For example, smaller projects have different criteria than larger ones, and brand extensions ...
