A recent study by the Toxic Substances Hydrology Program of the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) shows that a broad range of chemicals found in residential, industrial, and agricultural wastewaters commonly occurs in mixtures at low concentrations downstream from areas of intense urbanization and animal production. The chemicals include human and veterinary drugs (including antibiotics), natural and synthetic hormones, detergent metabolites, plasticizers, insecticides, and fire retardants. In microbiology, it is often necessary to determine the concentration
of bacteria in a sample (e.g., bacteria in blood, milk, or water
supply). Bacteria are "plated out" on agar plates (petri dishes) and
counts are usually expressed in colony-forming units per milliliter
(CFU/ml). A rule of thumb is that you should only count plates that
have between 30 - 300 colonies. If there are over 300 colonies on a plate, you
may undercount the true number since some bacteria will not form
colonies because of overcrowding.
