Expenditures by Canadian universities on scientific research and development accounted for about 40% of all spending on scientific research and development in Canada in 2006. Research in the natural and social sciences in Canada, with a few important exceptions, is almost exclusively funded by the Canadian taxpayer and is distributed to universities by five important federal funding agencies, the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC), the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC). Additional monies are also provided by the Canada ...

David Olive's Everybody's Business
anada’s attempt to Own the Podium in science involved a massive raid on the world’s brainpower that, in its ambition, is reminiscent of this country’s brash and ultimately successful attempt to “win” this year’s Winter Olympics. It does not mean Canada is now a world leader in science and innovation – the private sector lags – but it shows that it is a place where world-class researchers want to be. The ultimate goal should be to nurture our own, homegrown research stars, enrich our tradition of science and innovation and raise productivity and living standards. Canada needed to bring some energy to its scientific scene to ... market research, surveys and trends

University of Alberta: Canada Foundation for Innovation
Dr Kathleen Hegadoren began her career as a nurse specializing in child and adolescent psychiatry. An insatiable curiosity about the brain and how it works led her to a doctorate in neuropsychopharmacology (drugs that affect thought processes in the brain) and neurobiology (the basic biology of the brain). She puts her unique combined background in nursing and basic research to work in the study of depression in women. Passionate about improving the mental health of women, Hegadoren notes that twice as many women as men are diagnosed with depression. Her research could offer valuable information to help improve therapies ... industry trends, business articles and survey research

— Allan Rock, Minister of Industry, today welcomed a Framework Agreement on federally funded research between the Government of Canada and the Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada ( AUCC ). The Framework Agreement was announced at the National Summit on Innovation and Learning. Trees Soaking Up Less Carbon Than Expected, Study Finds
Scientists and policy-makers hoping to use forests to naturally soak up increasing amounts of carbon dioxide may have overestimated the role of trees as carbon sinks, according to a new study by University of Guelph researchers. Contrary to expectations, tree growth has declined over the past century despite rising amounts of CO2 in the atmosphere, said Madhur Anand, a professor in Guelph’s School of Environmental Sciences. Along with PhD students Lucas Silva and Mark Leithead, she co-authored a paper that appeared in the July issue of PLoS ONE , a peer-reviewed international journal published by the Public Library of ... market trends, news research and surveys resources
Bill Gates' favorite teacher
FORTUNE -- Sal Khan, you can count Bill Gates as your newest fan. Gates is a voracious consumer of online education. This past spring a colleague at his small think tank, bgC3, e-mailed him about the nonprofit , a vast digital trove of free mini-lectures all narrated by Khan, an ebullient, articulate Harvard MBA and former hedge fund manager. Gates replied within minutes. "This guy is amazing," he wrote. "It is awesome how much he has done with very little in the way of resources." Gates and his 11-year-old son, Rory, began soaking up videos, from algebra to biology. Then, several weeks ago, at the Aspen Ideas ... market trends, news research and surveys resources

How powerful are think tanks in the USA? Do they affect US policy ...
The term "think tanks" is an imprecise phrase used to describe a wide range of non-profit research organizations which engage in public policy analysis and research, and often advocate solutions. Some are strictly nonpartisan, researching policy issues without regard to political outcomes, while others see one of their main functions as that of providing intellectual support to politicians or parties. They are as ubiquitous in the American political scene as interest groups, media consultants, "spin doctors," and the political parties themselves. Think tanks are proliferating all around the world. The fact is that over 5,500 ...
When It Comes to Innovation, Is America Becoming a Third World ...
We are grateful to Arianna Huffington, editor-in-chief, The Huffington Post, based in Los Angeles, California, for her submission “When It Comes to Innovation, Is America Becoming a Third World Country?” to the Socratic dialogue initiated by The ATCA 5000 and The Philanthropia 1000 networks worldwide. Post her diagnosis, she suggests three ways forward, including universal broadband access, the creation of a green bank and developing immigration policies to attract entrepreneurs to help drive innovation and job creation. We look forward to your participation in this Socratic dialogue. She writes: Dear DK and Friends
