The best way to show your support for a candidate in an election, or to get into politics, is by going door-to-door in support of your chosen candidate. This article makes a few assumptions: 1. You should have either talked to the candidate before, or be very familiar with his political positions. Different people are going to have different issues they want addressed, and you should be prepared to at least engage in a short dialogue with them. 2. The campaign should give you a list of the houses they want you to go to. Don't just walk blindly into a neighborhood and go to every door; the campaign should have an ...

Raising the Dead | The American Prospect
Democrat Mark Critz after winning the special election, Tuesday, May 18, 2010, for the remainder of the term for the congressional seat vacated by the death of John Murtha. (AP Photo/Keith Srakocic) For a party presumably at death's door, the Democrats had themselves a pretty fair election yesterday, while liberal and labor Democrats had an altogether bang-up time. The Democrats held John Murtha's southwest Pennsylvania House seat in exactly the kind of white working-class district that is supposed to be trending Republican this year. Voters ousted the exquisitely vulnerable Arlen Specter -- an avowedly careerist ... market research, surveys and trends

America's Backward Voter Registration System and How to Fix it, By ...
One of the biggest takeaways from last year's U.S. presidential election had little to do with campaigning: Winning votes, it seems, requires signing them up first. Last November's election saw turnout rise among Hispanic, Black, and young voters, new census data shows -- gains made possible by huge increases in registration rates. And those newbie voters played a key role in the outcome.  What's more surprising, however, is that nearly 30 percent of all eligible Americans still aren't registered. Nine million U.S. citizens couldn't get on the voting rolls because of registration deadlines, and another ... industry trends, business articles and survey research

I heart canvassing
explored the strange and rather sadistic concept of door-to-door canvassing, in the context of the British election. With our own municipal election heating up, the weather (mostly) glorious, and a good few registered candidates out there, I think it’s time to make a plea for the old-fashioned door-to-door canvass in our own city. First, a confession: I love canvassing. That’s not to say that I do it very much these days… over the last few provincial, federal and municipal campaigns I’ve faced the reality shared by all those 30- or 40-something politicos that came before me: kids make life more complicated. Despite my ... market trends, news research and surveys resources
Bowdoin Geneva neighbors push to improve Census count
Looking to fight back against a poor census response and what some local activists called bad publicity for the neighborhood, city and U.S. Census officials launched an enumeration offensive earlier this month in the Bowdoin Geneva area, a neighborhood that has been singled out as one of Boston’s lowest responding areas. Groups of city workers, official Census takers and around 60 volunteers canvassed the streets surrounding St. Peter’s Church on June 19 in a coordinated effort to reach out to what’s referred to as tract 918, Boston’s lowest-responding Census district. Workers from City Hall brought along their own ... market trends, news research and surveys resources

COMM-ORG 2010 Papers
What long-term capacities and relationships have been left behind in the relentless focus on legislative, electoral issue, and candidate mobilizations over the last few years? To name just a few in my home state of Maine: A bright young couple working full-time jobs while volunteering tirelessly for political and health care campaigns now plans to move to Ireland. Feeling sold-out by campaigns that use their labor without consulting them before compromising their goals for health care reform, they'd rather move to a country they believe already has a decent health care system than continue pouring precious ...

QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS
Fishing: RE: Winchester Model 6035 fly rod, bamboo fly rods ...
QUESTION: I have a Winchester Bamboo fly rod that reads Hop Brook on the rod and on the tag that is on the canvass bag.  The model number is also on the tag and is 6035.  The rod has both of its tips and appears to have been fished very little if any.  The canvass bag is also in excellent condition and has the original tag on it which is still readable. The rod used to belong to my fathers uncle and I was just wondering about an approximate value.  I haven't been able to find too much information on the web so any information you may have would be extremely helpful. ...
Sociology: sociology, entry level positions, degree in sociology
I am a good person to pose this question to, since I once hit the job market with a BA in sociology. In specificially applying one's skills in sociology in a job, the short answer is "not much".   The longer answer which may help explain the first answer is as follows: Generally, the labor market is structured so that entry level positions pay poorly and are difficult "bad" jobs.  The great majority of capitalists' wealth comes from extracting surplus labor value from the proletariat. If you are in your early 20's and have no other real work experience (as I did when I graduated from ...
