Some More Fluff On The Budget
In my last e-mail update on DNR’s budget, I mentioned that we were monitoring a projected $11 million hole in the Uplands segment of the Resource Management Cost Account (RMCA).  By “hole”, I meant that if revenue projections and planned spending both remained constant, by the end of the biennium (Jun 30, 2011) the Uplands RMCA would have an $11 million deficit.  Since that July 8 message, Budget Director Cullen Stephenson and his team have been working to refine the projection.  Now, with close-out of the 07-09 Biennium accomplished, completion of 09-11 allotments, and thoughtful work by Product ... market research, surveys and trends

Forest Service shifts focus from fire prevention to hazard trees
Nearly a decade into the largest bark beetle outbreak in Colorado history, U.S. Forest Service managers are refocusing their priorities. Dozens of Forest Service roads and trails in Grand County are being red flagged for logging and funds are being redirected to treat any remaining Forest Service lands that share border towns and residential communities. The unusually windy spring was “a major wake-up call,” said District Ranger Craig Magwire of the Arapaho-Roosevelt National Forest's Sulphur Ranger District. “It's been all hands on deck,” dealing with blowdowns across roads and trails across ... market trends, news research and surveys resources
Wildfires underscore need to thin forests
An unprecedented coalition of officials, environmentalists and timber company representatives met this week to advance a bold plan to protect fire-menaced forest communities by thinning millions of acres. The group working on the plan to use a reinvented timber industry to save the forest met in Pine on Tuesday in the shadow of a ravenous 14,800-acre blaze near Flagstaff that underscored the urgency of their task. As of Thursday night the fire was 40 percent contained. “We’ve got fire behavior up there like our folks have never seen,” said Acting Coconino Forest Supervisor Heather Provencio of the Schultz Fire, roaring through ... market trends, news research and surveys resources
