The American Spectator : My Dad, RIP
We held a memorial service on Monday for my father, who died at age 72 of cancer on April 28. Ordinarily I would think it best for a writer in a mostly political publication to keep private his reminiscences of a recently deceased father. There is nothing new, after all, about sons being able to share stories about the ball games where their fathers cheered for them and the barbecues and camping trips they shared. But not a lot of fathers were longtime lieutenants in the conservative movement. My dad, Haywood H. Hillyer III, was one such mid-level leader. (He's been mentioned before in American Spectator ... market research, surveys and trends

For a research project of the Institute of Medieval Studies, Sophia University, on ‘Medieval and Renaissance Concepts of Beauty’ I turned my back on promising but too demanding topics, such as Ficino’s retrieval of Plato and Plotinus, or the idea of Beauty in Michelangelo’s Rime, or Galileo’s literary criticism of Ariosto and Tasso, and instead chose to discuss the discovery and/or construction of Renaissance beauty in the Victorian age, with particular reference to the first English book on the subject, Walter Pater’s Studies in the History of the Renaissance (1873), revised as The Renaissance: Studies in Art and Poetry (1877, ... market research, surveys and trends

Employer Health Costs Do Not Drive Wage Trends | The Seminal
Financing health care reform will be a prime subject of discussion among the Senate and House conferees, specifically how much the financing relies on a tax on high-cost health plans. Supporters of this tax label these “Cadillac” health plans and make the assumption that they provide comprehensive (even lavish) coverage that requires very low out-of-pocket costs from beneficiaries. However, in the dysfunctional health insurance market, high-cost does not equal high-value; and it is not comprehensiveness of coverage that is the primary predictor of who will be affected by this tax, rather it is the size of the firm they work for ... industry trends, business articles and survey research
Long Island Business News » Newsday union spars with Cablevision ...
Threatened with another round of job cuts and simmering over the loss of retirement benefits, Newsday’s 700 union employees have grown wary of the newspaper’s new owners, Cablevision Systems Corp ., which acquired the daily over the summer. Union workers have not received retirement benefits since 2007, when Sam Zell took over Tribune Co., which owned Newsday. But when Newsday was sold to Cablevision, it became the responsibility of the Dolan Family and Local 406 to cut a pension deal. That hasn’t happened. At the same time, non-union workers continue to receive a 5 percent match on their retirement accounts. According to their ... industry trends, business articles and survey research
America's Love Affair with Small Business
Lori Webster has been feeling the love recently. Small business love, that is. She's been telling the customers of her family-owned stationery store about the 3/50 Project , one of many campaigns to support local small businesses. Then last week, Tom Hanks walked into Webster's Fine Stationers in Altadena, Calif.—about 20 miles from Hollywood. Celebrities aren't unheard-of in the store: The actor John C. Reilly lives in the neighborhood and drops by occasionally. But Hanks, who was filming on location across the street, went out of his way to talk up small business. "He told us how nice it is to shop at a ... market trends, news research and surveys resources

How does a hard-working 20-something go to law school? | Ask ...
I just took the LSAT on Saturday, and now I've got a couple questions. I did flip through some of the Ask MeFi archives, and while there was enlightenment, my top two questions didn't come up. 1)I graduated in '01- what kind of recommendations do they want to see? 2)How the hell am I going to pay for my living expenses while I'm there? What looks best in terms of recommendations? Old bosses? Older professors? Friends done well? The biggest names I can get my hands on? If it helps, I'm in my mid-20s and I've been working in the whole new media/online business-type-area since I graduated. I ...
What has your cat done that amazed you?
Whenever we had a dish with tuna in it, we'd put the can on the floor and  let her lick the can. She really liked that.   One Sunday morning, I got out of bed and felt something cold on the carpet. I looked down and discovered that she had brought an unopened can of tuna into our bedroom as a hint to us to give her more tuna.   Since my wife was still asleep, I investigated further. I found that the cupboard where we kept the tuna cans had been opened. Apparently, she had somehow jumped up to open the cupboard door, had knocked an unopened can of tuna onto the floor and had pushed it into our bedroom. I ...
