The livelihoods of 75% of the worlds poor will continue to depend on agriculture for the foreseeable future. At the same time, rising food prices are likely to make problems of hunger and poverty worse for urban and rural people. Research that produces innovation in agriculture is therefore more important than ever for reducing poverty. DFID has promised to double funding for research on agriculture, fisheries and forestry to 80 million a year by 2010. To meet that promise, we will continue to work on the research priorities in the 2006 Strategy for Research on Sustainable Agriculture. We will also focus on key emerging ...
Historically, the main technical challenge of OTEC was to generate significant amounts of power efficiently from this very small temperature ratio. Changes in efficiency of heat exchange in modern designs allow performance approaching the theoretical maximum efficiency. The Earth's oceans are continually heated by the sun and cover over 70% of the Earth 's surface; this temperature difference contains a vast amount of solar energy , which can potentially be harnessed for human use. If this extraction could be made cost effective on a large scale, it could provide a source of renewable energy needed to deal with energy ...

The 20th Century Transformation of U.S. Agriculture and Farm Policy
A common point in the debate over U.S. farm programs has been that current policies were tailored for a time in American agriculture that no longer exists. The structure of farms and farm households—and of the rural communities in which they exist—has changed enough over the last century to raise questions about the efficacy of policies with roots in an agriculturally based economy. How have policies adapted to change in the agricultural ... industry trends, business articles and survey research
Community Supported Agriculture
This publication reports on the history of Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) in the U.S. and discusses the various models that have emerged. Recent trends in the CSA movement are presented and demographic information provided about the distribution of CSA farms in the U.S. Several CSA cases are profiled and a survey of recent research is presented. References and resources follow the narrative. The concept of Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) was brought to the United States by Jan VanderTuin from Switzerland in 1984. Projects in Europe date to the 1960s, when women's neighborhood groups approached farmers to ... industry trends, business articles and survey research

FDA Rules Will Impact Hoosier Pork Production
intended to help reduce the development of resistance to antibiotic drugs used in cattle, hogs and chickens. The 19 page document summarizes a number of published reports on antimicrobial resistance and, according to FDA Deputy Commissioner Joshua Sharfstein, The overall weight of evidence supports the conclusion that the using antimicrobial drugs for production purposes is not in the interest of public health. The draft guidance recommends phasing in measures that would limit uses to those that are considered necessary for animal health and that include veterinary oversight, thereby reducing the potential for antimicrobial ... market trends, news research and surveys resources
Making biofuels a national industry by moving beyond conventional corn ethanol.
In comments last week, Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack said that USDA plans to do what it can to make ethanol a national industry by investing in infrastructure and technology. The agency, he said, “is set to release…a roadmap on how to build on the success of corn-based ethanol and to meet the goals of the federal Renewable Fuels Standard.” Today, multiple federal policies encourage the production and consumption of ethanol but as this NRDC co-sponsored ad clearly states, today’s policies are not about creating new or cleaner ethanol.  As currently structured, the Volumetric Ethanol Excise Tax ... market trends, news research and surveys resources

This IGERT (Integrative Graduate Education, Research, and Training) program is part of a large initiative (NEAT - Nanomaterials in the Environment, Agriculture, and Technology). NEAT supports interdisciplinary research, education and training at the interface of materials science and environmental science. Nanophases, small particles with very high surface areas, occur ubiquitously and interact strongly with living matter. The underlying characterization and fundamental science of nanomaterials is similar wherever such particles occur. This IGERT will educate students in four interrelated areas: the fundamental science and ...

WikiAnswers - What scientific evidence do young earth creation ...
There is no scientific evidence that supports the position of creationism in any form, much less the young-earthers. All claims and supposed "evidence" are simply misunderstood or misinterpreted facts, coupled with misapplied laws of science, to create a distorted worldview. For example, there is a large list of "proofs" below, none of which make any sense when properly explained and considered in the context of other scientific fields. There are several others which can be easily dismissed by even secondary school students, leaving nothing that even tenuously proves creationism of any form, much less able to ...
