The Fifth RTD Framework Programme differed considerably from its predecessors. It was conceived to help solve problems and to respond to major socio-economic challenges facing Europe. To maximise its impact, it focused on a limited number of research areas combining technological, industrial, economic, social and cultural aspects. Management procedures were streamlined with an emphasis on simplifying procedures and systematically involving key players in research.   A major innovation of the Fifth Framework Programme was the concept of "Key actions". Implemented within each of the four thematic programmes , "

I append below another brilliant suggestion from the redoubtable N. Miradon (who may be retired but hardly retiring -- and tireless!) in the form of a proposed letter to European MPs and MEPs about the forthcoming EC deliberations on Open Access policy . If I have not misunderstand, N. Miradon has drawn to our attention here an existing EU/EC policy under which it would be possible to implement an ID/OA mandate for EU research funding with no further legislative or consultative changes required at all! ( See comments further below: It looks to me as if pointing this out to the EC would be the shortest and easiest route to the ... market research, surveys and trends

European Microsystems Programs
Before launching into a review of activities in Europe it is useful to define the technology field(s) to be surveyed. Different organizations from different geographical backgrounds and companies/institutions with different application/product focus have varying interpretations of what is covered by terms such as MEMS (micro-electro-mechanical systems), micro-systems and and micro-machines. In the United States the predominant view of MEMS is one of integrated miniaturized devices and systems which are fabricated using processes compatible with those used in semiconductor integrated circuit production and which ... industry trends, business articles and survey research

How pregnant women, children can enjoy free medical care
With only five years left to achieve the United Nation’s Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) for maternal and child health, a strategic intervention like the maternal and child health programme meant for pregnant women and children under the age of five, irrespective of their economic status or residence, to access free medical care, may be the answer, reports Sade Oguntola. Ordinarily, many would expect women to prefer going for antenatal care in big teaching hospitals rather than a primary health care centre that is a stone’s throw from their home. But the case was the opposite with Mrs. Kemi Adeleye, a trader at Oje market, a ... market trends, news research and surveys resources

Which PC virus software is best, most user friendly? - Yahoo! Answers
I have used both Norton and McAfee and they both seem to take over my PC's and are hard to configure so they don't slow the PC and go looking for updates randomly. So which do you use and why?? I'll just list them into free and paid lists. Free - 1) Avira - high detection rates - 99% (though some false positives), low memory usage and easy to use. 2) Avast - slightly lower rates than avira - 98% (and more false positives), has more features than avira though, uses slightly more memory than avira but that can be ignored. User friendly 3) AVG - user friendly, decent detection rates - 93% though ...
What makes the Graphical User Interface user-friendly? - Yahoo ...
Sounds like you are getting how to make it user friendly, rather than what makes it user friendly. Note: GUI does not necessarily equal user friendly - I've seen a number of really bad GUI interfaces over the years. What makes it friendly? If you look at the differences in interfaces between applications when the term was first coined it was comparing console interfaces to graphical interfaces. So, a DOS box vs. a window. A GUI interface can present information and controls in a fashion that suits the task at hand, as well as making it more pleasing to look at. Definitely when compared to command prompt. Use of ...
