The American economy lost another 240,000 jobs in October, the government reported Friday, as cash-strapped consumers pulled back and businesses hunkered down, intensifying the distress gripping much of the country. The unemployment rate spiked to 6.5 percent from 6.1 percent, the highest level since 1994. Many analysts now expect unemployment will reach 8 percent by the middle of next year. Coupled with revisions to ...
The prevalence of unemployment is usually measured using the unemployment rate, which is defined as the percentage of those in the labor force who are unemployed. The unemployment rate is also used in economic studies and economic indices such as the United States ' Conference Board's Index of Leading Indicators as a measure of the state of macroeconomics . Mainstream economics believes in the main that unemployment is inevitable, and a necessary evil to prevent inflation ; this is disputed by some schools of heterodox economics . The causes of unemployment are disputed. Keynesian economics emphasizes unemployment ...

American joblessness: Sideways | The Economist
THE behaviour of American consumers has been rather confounding of late. Early in the year, retail sales were surprisingly strong, even as labour markets remained exceedingly weak. Recently, however, retail numbers have disappointed despite declines in household savings rates. Analysts, meanwhile, can't figure out what they want consumers to do. American household saving has to go up at some point; excessive borrowing drove the crisis from which the world is only now emerging. And yet, there is precious little holding the American economy up. If consumers don't keep spending, it's not clear where new economic ... market research, surveys and trends

The Latest Employment Woes
Today’s release of the latest employment numbers by the Bureau of Labor Statistics confirms fears that the nascent economic recovery is not yet taking hold in the jobs market. Private-sector employers added only 41,000 jobs last month (see figure), which is better than letting workers go but insufficient to keep pace even with increases in the labor force due to population growth. The U.S. population grew by 170,000 last month, with two-thirds (65 percent in May) in the labor force. Clearly there is still much to do to get our economy back to full employment. Economists talk about whether the recovery of jobs from the ... industry trends, business articles and survey research
RBA moves CPI back to centre stage
Quarterly inflation figures have regained their place as the most important data release of the Australian economic calendar. When the global financial crisis erupted in the second half of 2008, inflation slipped down the list of immediate concerns for the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA). The central bank has had an inflation target - two to three per cent on average over time - since 1993. For practical purposes, it means the RBA will use its control over interest rates to try to engineer economic growth as fast as can be managed without overtaxing the nation's production capacity - including its supply of available ... market trends, news research and surveys resources
Colorado, mountain West 'still struggling,' says Brookings economic study
The Denver area has made “discernible progress” in recovering from the recession, with two straight quarters of economic growth, “but that growth has yet to be translated into jobs,” says Mark Muro, co-author of the latest quarterly “Mountain Monitor” report on the Intermountain West’s economy from the Brookings Institution and the University of Nevada at Las Vegas . Denver was the only metro area in the region where the unemployment rate at the end of the year’s first quarter wasn’t higher than a year earlier, the report notes. But overall, the study says the cities of ... market trends, news research and surveys resources
