unemployment levels.  Many are now calling the end of the recession but there is no sign that California is inching closer to prosperity.  Last month the unemployment rate shot up to a post-World War II high of 12.2 percent.  This is only the official headline number.  The unemployment and underemployment rate is up to 23 percent putting California into its own mini depression.  The great housing bubble is still beating down on the state economy.  Alt-A and option ARM products are staring us squarely in the eyes for 2010.  Many of the banks and lenders were probably assuming that somehow by this point in the cycle that the ...
The prevalence of unemployment is usually measured using the unemployment rate, which is defined as the percentage of those in the labor force who are unemployed. The unemployment rate is also used in economic studies and economic indices such as the United States ' Conference Board's Index of Leading Indicators as a measure of the state of macroeconomics . Mainstream economics believes in the main that unemployment is inevitable, and a necessary evil to prevent inflation ; this is disputed by some schools of heterodox economics . The causes of unemployment are disputed. Keynesian economics emphasizes unemployment ...

It seems clear from the chart that areas with a bigger bubble diverge above the trend line. That makes sense, since those are people more likely to have overpaid, and maybe more likely to have speculated prices would continue going up dramatically. CalculatedRisk puts Florida’s outlier status to it’s severe foreclosure laws. Delinquencies aren’t foreclosures though. Ditto when they say negative equity significantly increases delinquencies. It would increase defaults, but has a fuzzier impact on delinquency. Also, it isn’t clear if this trend line is weighted by population or not. One of conservatism's tasks is to discourage irrational exuberance—or any other kind of exuberance, for that matter. Today this task is not demanding because anxiety about the sagging economy and surging government debt is broad and deep. Since the recession began in December 2007, Congress has passed two stimulus packages ($168 billion in February 2008 and $787 billion in February 2009), and last month the House passed a $154 billion jobs bill. The economy has been growing for more than six months. Yet job creation is sluggish. Today's unemployment rate is 10 percent; the underemployment rate—the unemployed, plus ... industry trends, business articles and survey research

Wednesday letters: Washington needs to be more active creating jobs
Jeff Harrington's article noted that Florida's unemployment rate "ticked up slightly to 11.5 percent." While it may be slower than we like, improvements are being made and it is not by mistake. The article shows that Washington needs to be more proactive in creating jobs through greater investment. Bills like the American Reinvestment and Recovery Act, as well as the recent bill providing funding for teachers and health care professionals, are doing their job. Public sector jobs are still jobs. This issue is covered by Section 48 of the Michigan Employment Security Act and the Unemployment Insurance Agency (UIA) Administrative Rules 112, 113, and 302. The law says that to be entitled to unemployment benefits for a week, the worker must be either “unemployed” or “underemployed.” An “unemployed” worker is one who has no earnings in a week; an “underemployed” worker is one who has some earnings in a week but is still entitled to some unemployment benefits for that week. Over the past 35 years worker productivity has made astonishing gains while wages grew slowly or not at all. Our economy has grown by whole percentage points each year yet wages grew at a fraction of a percent. Over the past decade underemployment has been staggering with wages horrifyingly low, and now with the recession and high employment that have gotten only worse. All this while taxes were consistently reduced and government intervention on wall street was negligible compared to previous decades. With all this in mind, what is the conservative solution for unemployment and underemployment, to ensure working Americans are ...
