The most severe loss of life occurred in New Orleans , Louisiana , which flooded as the levee system catastrophically failed, in many cases hours after the storm had moved inland. 2 Eventually 80% of the city and large tracts of neighboring parishes became flooded, and the floodwaters lingered for weeks. 2 However, the worst property damage occurred in coastal areas, such as all Mississippi beachfront towns , which were flooded over 90% in hours, as ...
On Poverty, Policy, and Real People « Working-Class Perspectives
the highest rate in 11 years.  Given the recession, the increase shouldn’t surprise us, and we’ll probably see higher numbers when the next report is issued in August.  I was surprised that the increase wasn’t more dramatic, but in fact the national poverty rate has hovered between about 10 and 13 percent for most of the past four decades.  While a few percentage points represent a whole lot of people, I was struck by the relative stability of the figures.  Clearly, today’s higher rate of poverty illustrates the effects of the recession.  But if we almost always have more than 10 percent of Americans living in poverty, then it’s ... market research, surveys and trends

How do they determine the unemployment rate? - Yahoo! Answers
I used to work on this survey for the census bureau.. they do a random sample, and to qualify as "unemployed" you have to have been working, and be actively looking for work over the past month. In other words, if you give up? You're not a stat any longer. If it's been more than a quarter you're unemployed, you're not a stat any longer. If you quit (I think), you don't count. There were so many in's and outs on it that I always felt it should be twice as high as the number quoted. Right now there are so many people who fall out of this study it's not funny. Sign in

Keynesian economics is a theory of total spending in the economy (called aggregate demand) and its effects on output and inflation . Although the term has been used (and abused) to describe many things over the years, six principal tenets seem central to Keynesianism. The first three describe how the economy works. 1. A Keynesian believes that aggregate demand is influenced by a host of economic decisions-both public and private-and sometimes behaves erratically. The public decisions include, most prominently, those on monetary and fiscal (i.e., spending and tax) policies. Some decades ago, economists heatedly debated the ...
