US demand for biodegradable plastic will grow 15.5 percent annually through 2012. Gains will be driven by escalating costs for petroleum-based resins and growing initiatives that favor renewable resources. Polyester-based and polylactic acid resins will grow the fastest, while starch-based types remain the largest segment. This study analyzes the 350 million pound US biodegradable plastic industry. It presents historical demand data (1997, 2002 and 2007) and forecasts for 2012 and 2017 by type (e.g., starch-based, polylactic acid, cellophane, polyester-based, photodegradable, polyvinyl alcohol), and market (e.g., packaging, ...
sources, radiological risks, and difficult nuclear legacies: Some institutional safeguards eroded in the half century of coexistence with the sword of nuclear annihilation. Although the most extreme threats are now greatly diminished, societal institutions still reverberate with lasting, sometimes intangible effects from the prolonged period of discord. Topping the list of present-day institutional legacies and challenges are demands to safeguard residual nuclear weapons , to pay off national debts , to clean up toxic residues, to reconstruct peacetime norms, and to fend off future threats to stability.

EU Awareness of Food and Garden Waste Management Benefits ...
Introducing ambitious Europe-wide targets for the separate collection of both food and garden waste could offer environmental and cost benefits worth more than €7billion (£6 billion) between 2013 and 2020, according to a report published as part of the European Commission’s work on potential new EU bio-waste legislation. The study, entitled ‘Assessment of the options to improve the management of bio-waste in the EU’ was published earlier this year with little fanfare by consultants ARCADIS and Eunomia, to look at the relative benefits and costs of various potential policy measures to deal with bio-degradable waste. market research, surveys and trends

Innovations in Urban Waste Management « The Dirt
The bio-degradable, one-time-use plastic bag could provide a more sustainable solution for human sewage management in urban slums around the world. Urea crystals within the bag break down the pathogens in feces. After use, the bag, which will be sold for 2-3 cents each, can be knotted and buried, turning into fertilizer. Anders Wilhelmson, who patented the bag, said “not only is it sanitary, they can reuse this to grow crops.” Wilhelmson tested the bag in Kenyan urban slums and found there were ample open space to bury the bags. According to UN estimates, some 2.6 billion people or 40 percent of global population ... industry trends, business articles and survey research

Call for local councils to be more proactive in waste management
Malta was still miles away from reaching the landfills directive where the amount of bio-degradable municipal waste that ends in landfills should have been reduced by the end of next month by some 75 per cent - Leo Brincat. Opposition spokesman on the environment Leo Brincat yesterday called for a national conference on the role of local councils in waste management. Speaking during the discussion in Parliament on the national waste management strategy, he said local councils could play a more proactive role in waste management to act as catalysts to a wider process. Biocomposites: A biocomposite is a material formed by a matrix (resin) and a reinforcement of natural fibers (usually derived from plants or cellulose). With wide-ranging uses from environment-friendly biodegradable composites to biomedical composites for drug/gene delivery, tissue engineering applications and cosmetic orthodontics. They often mimic the structures of the living materials involved in the process in addition to the strengthening properties of the matrix that was used but still providing biocompatibility, e.g in creating scaffolds in bone tissue engineering. Biodegradable: Biodegradation is the process by which ...
