Faculty from the UK College of Agriculture, in collaboration with other scientists, have been conducting basic research in the area of microbially-based biofuels and bioproducts since 1995. This research effort is based on the premise that structural plant carbohydrates (fibrous biomass) can be used as inexpensive and renewable feedstocks for biologically-mediated conversion processes. Our specific focus has been understanding and enhancing the use of thermophilic and anaerobic bacteria as bio-catalysts in the conversion of fibrous biomass to biofuels and other vendable chemicals. The major research thrusts include: ...
encompasses the country's development in the areas of transportation, communication, energy, materials, public works, public services (health care), domestic/consumer and defense technologies. The terms chosen for the "age" described below are both literal and metaphorical. They describe the technology that dominated the period of time in question but are also representative of a large number of other technologies introduced during the ...

The UK produces over 300 million tonnes of waste a year, 24% of which is derived from household or commercial sources. Historically, most domestic waste has been directed to landfill, and on current disposal rates, the UK has less than 10 years’ supply of landfill left. Challenging EU targets for the reduction of disposal of domestic waste to landfill have belatedly triggered a PFI market in waste recycling and treatment. Commercial waste producers have also experienced rising costs due to landfill tax and higher gate prices, and are also looking for alternatives to landfill. Waste disposal authorities face fines of £150/tonne ... market research, surveys and trends

EIA - Emissions of Greenhouse Gases in the U.S. 2008-Overview
emissions. There were small percentage increases in emissions of other greenhouse gases, but their absolute contributions to the change in total emissions were relatively small: 14.8 MMTCO2 2 e growth for methane (CH 4 ), 0.4 MMTCO 2 e growth for nitrous oxide (N 2 O), and 5.4 MMTCO 2 e growth for the man-made gases with high global warming potentials (high-GWP gases). As a result, the increases in emissions of these gases were more than offset by the drop in CO 2 emissions (Table 1 below). The decrease in U.S. CO 2 emissions in 2008 resulted primarily from three factors: higher energy prices— ... industry trends, business articles and survey research

I would like a clarification as to what you mean by "those sites containing the largest quantity of material remaining to be processed?" Do you mean the "total tonnage" of all material including peripheral materials as in "fill dirt" covering the site, waste containers, ground water, and structural components such as retaining barriers, dams, site liners, etc? Or do you mean the net tonnage of the toxic material itself? For example, a clean up effort might need to move several tons of inert 'fill' materials to extract a few pounds of an arsenic compound. In this case, the few pounds of the arsenic ...
