Recycling and Waste-to-Energy

recycling and waste to energy special research report Photo by
Protecting the environment is a key challenge of our time and as the world's leading steel company, ArcelorMittal is committed to helping develop sustainable solutions. The Group's research centers have set up dedicated Life Cycle Analysis (LCA) and recycling units to assess the impact of new products on the environment at the design stage (by means of LCA) and at end-of-life recovery and disposal (by validating their recyclability). This standardized (ISO 14040) method is used to determine the potential impact of a product on the environment throughout its entire life cycle, i.e. from the extraction of the raw ...

The Beauty of Planning Ahead: Waste Management at its Best ...
I really don't think you should be so positive about incinerators. They are counter-productive to achieving maximum waste diversion to recycling and, once built, they require a constant supply of combustible material to keep them going, which impinges on zero waste initiatives. While better than landfill, that's not saying much - in any event, about 40% of the waste remains as ash which has to be - guess what? - landfilled. The fly ash (in the filters) from the incineration process is pretty toxic too. The amount of energy they "recover" is a small fraction of that which is embodied in the manufacture ... market research, surveys and trends

EPA Report Links Recycling and Climate Change -
linking materials management, including recycling and waste management, and land management to a reduction in the country’s greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions . The September 2009 report, titled Opportunities to Reduce Greenhouse Gas Emissions through Materials and Land Management Practices , finds 42 percent of GHG emissions are influenced by materials management policies, including the manufacturing, transporting and disposal of products. In addition, another 16 to 20 percent of GHG emissions are linked to land management policies, including construction and development. A 50 percent reduction in packaging use would yield ... industry trends, business articles and survey research
waste-to-energy: Chicago-Area Facility Recycles, Energizes Waste ...
With its landfills rapidly filling to capacity, one community in Chicago has devised an important alternative to landfilling that will not only process waste, but also recycle and convert it to energy. A combination recycling and waste-to-energy (WTE) facility in the Village of Robbins, Ill., a suburb of Chicago, can accept, separate and process the 1,600 tons of residential and commercial waste it receives daily. Of that solid waste, 25 percent by weight is recycled, while the other 75 percent is converted to refuse-derived-fuel (RDF). At an 85 percent capacity rate, the facility can handle about 1.5 million tons of solid waste ... industry trends, business articles and survey research
Cowi plans to introduce sustainable life cycle thinking in Gulf region
Sustainable waste management has long been an unquestionable part of Northern Europe's waste solutions. The landfill disposal of combustible wastes is banned, and waste recovery plants designed by architects fit nicely into the surrounding environment. An undiscovered area - soon to be explored Cowi has been part of this positive development of sustainable and cost-effective waste solutions for more than 40 years in several countries worldwide. With its presence in the Gulf region, and local offices spread around the peninsula, Cowi is now ready to introduce its sound experience in waste management to the Gulf, where ... market trends, news research and surveys resources
Citizen's Voice: Closing Yucca Mountain a waste
In 1982, Congress passed the Nuclear Waste Policy Act, mandating permanent repositories for nuclear waste. Currently, Yucca Mountain in Nevada stands as the sole repository for the country's nuclear waste. Overall, nearly $14 billion has been spent on this 135,000 metric ton storage facility. Yet in 2009, the Obama administration announced that it would cut all funding for the Yucca Mountain project. Not only is this a direct violation of federal law, but if this action holds, it will render the $14 billion investment a complete waste of money. There are 1,460 metric tons of nuclear waste in Tennessee. Because the Obama ... market trends, news research and surveys resources
