Virginia's Solid Waste Management Program has been in existence since 1971. The program's mission and policy are to protect human health and the environment, while at the same time efficiently conserving, managing, and planning for the waste that is generated. [1] The existing solid waste management structure is governed by a series of laws, regulations, and guidance, augmented by a series of reports. Thus, Virginia's solid waste program does not rely on a single unified document as a "State Solid Waste Plan." Instead, solid waste planning is directed and coordinated in accordance with a suite of legal ...

Rotting Garbage
the Bloomberg garbage disposal plan-and finds that it has been rotting in the sun: "The Bloomberg administration's garbage plan has been sitting on a shelf awaiting full implementation for four years, and some critics think it's on the verge of spoiling. After extensive political wrangling, the administration and the City Council in 2006 agreed on a solid waste management plan, which shuffled the location of solid waste stations and relied on trains and barges for moving trash instead of diesel-spewing trucks. Though it was hailed as a major step forward for environmental justice at the time, four years later many ... market research, surveys and trends

Utilities director stands by recommendation
about something I have done as part of my work. However, that time has come (only because it was called to my attention by a colleague). I am referencing Mr. Jim Mastro's missive "Let's talk trash" that appeared in the June 6 edition of Hernando Today and to his presentation to the Board of County Commissioners on June 1. In both his letter and in his presentation, Mr. Mastro sang the praises for something called a "Dirty MRF" (rhymes with "Smurf"). MRF - in government's world of interminable acronyms (i.e. WCVs deliver MSW to MRFs...*) - stands for Materials Recovery Facility. All ... market trends, news research and surveys resources

Waste Disposal
The disposal of garbage in the world is a problem that continues to grow with the development of industrialized nations and the growth of population. Since the beginning of time people have needed to find a way of disposing of their trash. In 18th century England and France, carters were paid by individuals to carry trash and discard it on the outskirts of town. Disposal in open pits became routine and Benjamin Franklin initiated the first municipal cleaning program in Philadelphia in 1757. Since then we have come a long way and have developed types of waste that cannot simply be dumped into a hole.  As Americans, ...

Can you put electronics out in single-sort recycling pick up ...
My husband insists that we should dump our no-longer-working paper shredder out with the recycling tonight. It's single sort, but they take plastic. I think with the electronics and sharp blades it's ridiculous, and poses a hazard to the crew that picks it up. Can someone help settle this one for us? Member since: March 14, 2009 Total points: 349 (Level 2) Absolutely NOT!! There are toxic elements in electronics so you cannot put them in your regular recycling. What are the zero waste management programs here in the ...
"The Zero Waste Management (ZWM) extends the principles of recycling to form a circular system where as much of the original material as possible is reused. Discarded materials are not seen as garbage in need of disposal but as valuable resources in need of new application." "Chemist Paul Palmer, who was the first to use the term in the mid-1970s, says that zero waste depends on the redesigning of industrial, commercial, and consumer goods. While recycling contents itself with attempting to deal with goods after they have become waste materials." "Dr. Metodio Palaypay, a former professor of the UP College of Medicine and ...
