In 1997 there was a decision to centralise responsibility for waste management, implying a shift in powers from the provincial authorities to the central government authorities. The amendment to the Environmental Management Act reflecting the change came into force on 8 May 2002. In the wake of the power shifts, the Act stipulates that the Ministry for Housing, Spatial Planning and the Environment must draw up a Waste Management Plan once in every six years. The plan must stipulate policy for the management of all waste covered by the Environmental Management Act. The National Waste Management Plan 2002-2012 (LAP) was the first ...

The Victorian Government will spend almost $54 million over the next five years to assist councils, the community and industry adapt to increased recycling opportunities. Environment and Climate Change Minister Gavin Jennings said the funding would be made available through increases to landfill levies and would help create up to 700 jobs while further protecting our environment. “The Victorian Government is taking action to protect our environment by reducing waste to landfill, increasing recycling and at the same time creating jobs for Victorian families,” Mr Jennings said. “Victorians are already great recyclers but the $53.7 ... market research, surveys and trends
Nuclear costs spiral as clean energy budgets face axe | Left Foot ...
Once again, evidence is mounting that the cost to Britain of nuclear power is spiralling. The new energy secretary, Chris Huhne, has briefed The Guardian this morning that he has inherited a “£4 billion black hole in unavoidable nuclear decommissioning and waste costs” . The newspaper reports that the black hole is “equivalent to wiping out one sixth of the overall cuts in public spending identified by the Treasury with such fanfare last week”. Pennsylvania County Gets $34.7 Million Bill for Harrisburg Debt

The county received notice it has to make the payments on the notes, which the county co-guaranteed, after the city said it couldn’t cover the cost. There’s just $1.34 in accounts set up to service the zero-coupon debts, which mature on Dec. 15, according to the trustee for the issues. The city’s “financial situation precludes it from making the payments,” Chuck ... market trends, news research and surveys resources
WA UPDATE: E-waste, the next 'big thing'
Electronic waste (or e-waste) is, apparently, the next big thing in waste management. Depending on who you believe, it is variously polluting, harmless, trendy, pointless and an issue. Where there is little disagreement is that e-waste is growing in quantity and profile. By Adam Johnson. In response, the WA Government has decided to take action. The Minister has decided that there is to be a temporary scheme to provide e-waste collection and recycling services to residents of WA. Given that WA is quite a large state with rather daunting transport logistics confronting recycling operations, the Minister has wisely sought guidance ... market trends, news research and surveys resources
