and focused on what historians call the "3 Rs": relief, recovery and reform. That is, relief for the unemployed and poor; recovery of the economy to normal levels; and reform of the financial system to prevent a repeat depression. The New Deal produced a political realignment, making the Democratic party the majority, with its base in liberal ideas, big city machines, and newly empowered labor unions, ethnic minorities, and the white South. The Republicans were split, either opposing the entire New Deal as an enemy of business and growth, or accepting some of it and promising to make it more efficient. The realignment ...

Money Matters: Citibank Tanks World Markets In Blackmail Attempt ...
All the world markets are struggling to keep from drowning in the red due to the startling news that Citibank is going to hold a huge fire sale. Yesterday, the Japanese muttered darkly about selling off nearly a trillion dollars in FOREX reserves and now Citibank is ditching half a trillion. All the other Big Bankers are trying to unload this ugly mess in drips and drabs using the new Federal Reserve Window of Opportunity™ that will accept any Tier III asset parading as a AAA Tier I property. Price of oil surges upwards so this masks the true losses on Wall Street since energy companies are traded there. And during all this ... market research, surveys and trends
The Futurist: Why the US Will Still be the Only Superpower in 2030 ...
I have seen the fall of an empire (an evil empire) and a trading empire (Japan). At the peak of their prowse, the world trembled at the empires' sucesses. Those empires fell dramatically over about a 4 year decline. I predict that the Chinese commercial sucess will fall, perhaps over a 4 year period also. I am not stating that the Chinese have peaked already. The seeds of their fall are built into the growth of their current sucess. The Chinese are morally bankrupt, politically and economically. Communism is a broken model. Corruption is throughly engrained in its economy. Communist China treats the Chinese like dirt. ... market research, surveys and trends

Linking Actions to Profits in Strategic Decision Making - The ...
The Action-Profit Linkage Model helps firms identify, measure and understand the causal links between actions and profits. Between 1990 and 1993, customers of the commercial waste-collection services of Browning-Ferris Industries (BFI) defected to competitors at a rate of 11% to 13% per year. Senior managers focused on raising customer satisfaction, but between 1995 and 1997, the defection rate increased to 13% to 15%. BFI’s original growth strategy of acquiring similar businesses that would provide new customers had become too expensive. The only alternative appeared to be customer retention, so managers began exploring ...

The White House wants to know: What are the most important issues ...
Small businesses should be able to hire the workers they need, without thought to benefits and perks that larger companies can afford. Eventually, as companies grow, to attract higher caliber talent, they will have to offer higher caliber benefits and coverage. But to hold small businesses to the same standard as well-capitalized, public corporations is ludicrous. The backbone of our economy is small and medium-sized enterprises that are privately owned and run. This is where people make their living, as owners and employees. Unfairly and unnecessarily burdening this sector of the economy with regulations meant for firms ...
What do you do with 3lbs. of mercury? | Ask MetaFilter
I have a friend who is an active scrapper. She is constantly collecting metals of all sorts, and periodically taking it all to the scrap yard, where she gets money for selling scrap metal. She is more than willing to dumpster dive to get a piece of copper or a few aluminum cans. She works as a commercial cleaning woman, sometimes cleaning out buildings before and after construction. She was recently cleaning out an old (semi-abandoned) 6 story building in Central Florida. One of the offices was once, a long time ago, a dentist's office. There, she found the mercury - 3lbs 2oz of the silvery liquid stuff. (Apparently, ...
